Transmission question

I have read that in 98 ford used 2 transmissions. How do I tell which one I have? Is one better than the other?

Drivers door tag should have code E for 4r100. Transmission oil pan shape is also a good way to tell. 4r100 is a heavier duty transmission.

Btw, a code U would indicate a 4r70.

Crawl underneath it and count of the transmission oil pan has 14 or 20 bolts keeping the pan to the transmission.
