Hey guys, hopefully some of you can give me some good advice.

We were trying to sell my 2003 Ford Exp (149k miles) and it was driving like a dream, and it was beautiful inside & out. Then out of the blue, it breaks down and completely shuts down & sounds like the entire engine is scraping the ground.

Repair guy tells us the oil pump went out, all the oil drained out & locked up the engine and now I need a new engine.

I was trying to sell it for a little below blue book at $6500.

Repair guy said spend $3000 on an engine (including labor) or just sell it as is for $2500.

Does this sound right?

And how do you advertise a truck that won't even run, that needs a new engine? Are there people in the market for that?

Total bummer, can't believe this happened. It was such a great truck too.

I would think running would be best. Why don't you phone around to see what you can find at an auto wrecking yard. Check this site .

Advertise the car as a mechanic special, engine seized. Include quality pictures of all sides, interior and engine bay. If you have a free and clear title in your name, state so in the ad.

You can advertise in many online sites. The one I monitor is craigslist, I only look for private party vehicles that preferably have been garage queens, the owner knows nothing about repairing vehicles, has all the repair documentation plus they can't wait to get rid the money pit.

Consider what the repair will cost and subtract that from the KBB value for the vehicles condition. In a perfect world that would be the most you could get. Unfortunately the world isn't perfect and probably will be half of that at most. I picked up an inop 99 for $1100, only needed a fuel pump and radiator to give you an idea. If you were closer to the Atlanta area I'd be interested but that is one heck of a tow. Unless you really want to part with it......

bessie, unfortuantely, based on the situation, the mechanic isn't too far off. Either way, you are down to gaining about $3000 for the vehicle. odds are, you will get more money for the truck if you repair the engine and then sell it for the higher dollar value. Atleast that way you can say that you have a newer engine in the truck and that will entice more people into it. When you advertise a "mechanics special", most people read that as "I am tired of dealing with it, offer me some lowball offer and I will take it", atleast those that are willing to take the time to fix said vehicle.
