My 2000 XLT 5.4 4X4 Expedition was running perfect. Then it just missed a beat but started purring again. Hmm I thought. As I started back on a 20 mile journey it almost quit running. Check engine light ...service engine is what I think pops up. I limp to a gas station and everything is fine...oil water ect. Truck starts running better but I just flashers on limp home. Had it checked and he said they need to have it longer to diagnose it.
I almost want to disconnect battery ...clear the code and see what happens . Im thinking O2 sensor? Anyone got a guess?

Guessing is useless and a waste of time.

Have the vehicle scanned to retrieve any stored trouble codes. Disconnecting the battery may erase any stored codes and delay your repair.

Mine quit at 60 mph yesterday and failed to restart. I waited after looking under the hood and it fired back up and drove home. I will scan it today and replace the pcm power relay. It died like I shut the key off. The dash stayed lit even the cruise light stayed on.

I suspect yours lost sync for a fraction of a second, look for cam and crank sync issues
