Here's my situation. I've got 35s on my expedition which is making the speedo/odometer read wrong. So should I go with a simple tuner with a couple tunes? Should I get different gears?

that is what a tuner will do recalibrate your PCM for the bigger tires.
he or she wont try to harass you in to doing other modifications to your vehicle.
what else do you want me to tell you?
do it right the first time go to a ford tuner.

My SCT X4 will let you calibrate the speedo for tire size changes. Haven't used it yet since I still have stock size tires till they wear out.

What if I end up changing the gearing or something won't it have to take it back to the tuner and have them retune it? Also with a SCT tuner would I need custom tunes made ?

I have a superchips tuner. I was able to calibrate for larger tires. If you want to calibrate for larger tires and cant live with the speedo being off. I would suggest buying a cheap tuner with canned tunes for now, and upgrading later to a tuner with custom tunes, if you change your gears or add other mods. It may not be ideal, but you can always sell the cheap tuner later and recoup some of the cost.

With the SCT you don't need custom tunes for the tire size changes. Easy to change and set up. Mine can hold 10 custom tunes and you can make changes with the custom ones too.

Are canned tunes any good or do they just fix the speedometer and maybe give a few more hp? How much is a cheap tuner? Also how much is a good tuner and tunes?

I have superchips and yes you will feel the difference...depending on which tune you set it to that is programmed in your tuner...take off is great but im not looking to race anyone from the light...jumping the light or anything of that nature but if I need to step on it...its there...also...there are several settings on tuners...I normally use the gas saver tune to increase my mpg's...but my superchips cortex 1950 is "canned tuned" meaning pre-programmed...there are ppl that can offer a tuner and program it to the conditions of your truck such as you have exhaust...CAI...etc...

canned tunes are good but if you are in the particulars of your engine and want certain stuff than you want to talk to a programmer such as 5startuning in the vendor section...and for the same price as a canned tune you can get up to 5 custom tunes for your truck to your liking

yes you would have to take it back...if you know that youre going to do the gears you should wait for the tune when its done...you wont need a custom tune with SCT...its an option to have custom tunes...same price so I would suggest custom...I bought my superchips before I found out about custom tunes by 5startuning...by like a month so I stayed with my programmer

if gears aren't in your plans get the tuner and adjust for tire size...if gears are in the plans...wait to get the programmer after the gears are in cuz its more than just getting the speedo right with a tuner...its engine performance...shift points...mpg's...hp...setting up the truck to your liking for the optimum performance that you can get...bonus is being able to change settings depending on what youre doing
