I did mine without the reformat step. I went straight into it and had no issues. Been about a week or so now.

Lou, What version were you at before going to 3.4?

I cannot remember the build number, but I am pretty sure that I was at the latest one of v3.0. owner.ford.com did not show any SYNC updates for my vehicle.

Interesting! So you just did the 19101 and the 19274, no format tool?

Correction.

I revisited the steps I took. I skipped the optional firmware update using the .vbf file.

I used the three USB method where USB 1 was the format utility, USB 2 was the v3.4 install, and USB 3 was the update to Build 19274.

Sorry for the misinformation.

Yeah, all of us are skipping the firmware part. You have to use a special adapter, beta version of FORSCAN or a Ford Dealer Computer to do the APIM firmware update.

Of the early versions yes.

19274 is more stable. No pauses, no random reboots, 19274 is just more stable. It is obvious when you run it.

Also, apparently there is a way to still use the reformat tool, if you install 19101 over top of 19274. So going all the way, does not completely prevent you from going back to 3.0, just makes it more of a pain.

Come on man, take the plunge!

Pretty sure I never ran 19200 on mine. I did 19101, then 19274.

What are the benefits of upgrading the APIM firmware vs leaving as is?

That really is the magic question!

Honestly I haven’t seen a straight answer.

Most people in the know I have talked to have said it isn’t worth the risk unless you have access to the Dealer Diag System.
