Unless you know what you are doing inside a transmission and have a clean work environment and work ethic, you are better off staying out of it.
A quality name brand torque wrench is mandatory since some valve bodies are easily distorted which can lock the spool valves in place.

Should you decide to go in anyway I strongly suggest getting a manual on the model transmission.

Why do you want to clean it? How bad is the fluid?

when my truck shifts into 3rd it hits neutral and i have to push the O/D button to turn the O/D off and i can drive in 2nd. it started off when it would go to shift to 3rd i would have to let off the throttle and let the rpms come down and then it would engage and be fine until i stopped and then i would have to do it over again until one day i left a stop light and it quit going into 3rd all together. the O/D light does not come on or flash only the service engine light does. i had the code read and its p0740. i went and got a new tcc solenoid and checked the harness that runs along the passenger side of the truck the best i could because i could not get it all the way out of the truck and it wasnt burnt nor did it have any damage so yesterday i replaced the shift solenoids and the hard plastic wire harness and it still does the same thing

The p0740 code has many causes. This is where the high end scan tools that are able to command the tcm are beneficial. You should also establish what the line pressure is.

How many miles are on the trans, and what condition is the fluid in?

the truck has 152,000 miles but i'm not sure if its the original trans. there is a light blue sticker on the side of the pan reffering to service exchange. the fluid don't look bad and it doesnt smell burnt. before it quit shifting into third altogether when third engaged it would shift into O/D and even kickdown to passing gear with no problems. do you think it could be a o-ring in the valve body or the 2-3 acumulator has a bad seal?

Other than that, shouldn't be a problem in finding the cause.....if you are willing to dive into it.
It is what I refer to as a wonder transmission - as in "I wonder how long it is going to take me to find the problem".

thank you for the info so far today i unhooked the tps msensor to see if it made a difference and it just made it shift harder between 1st and 2nd still no 3rd or 4th. i also tried running a jumper wire from the harness connector uptop down to the connector on the trans for the tcc solenoid the violet/yellow wire and it didnt make a difference but i did notice that when i unplugged the connector on the trans it was covered in trans fluid and i might be wrong but there shouldnt be trans fluid on the outside connection of that harness and im kinda wondering if that would short out the tcc solenoid
