I am not exactly a technaical person but all of a sudden my 2004 Eddie Bauer 5.4Lhas developed a noise when cold - almost sounds like a vlave clatter but lately I am wondering if it is a crack in the exhaust manifold(?). Happens when I start it in the morning when it's cold out. Lasts about 2-3 miles then disappears. It does not do it after the truck has sat all day outside unless I am late leaving and it is down to 40 or so again.

Ok - that was NOT very scientific but any suggestions as to what it might be? Thanks!

you could even have a loose or broken bolt in the exhaust manifold.... it sounds like an exhaust leak. When the components get hot they expand and close the gaps.

Take a look at your lugs on the manifolds. I had one blow out on my 99 expy. Start it and listen on either side for where its coming from.
