All the manufacturers are now advertising how maintenance free their new cars are to sell them. They don't care if that means they fail on your dime later in life as long as their marketing program looks appearing to the non-car people that are comparing 2 vehicles.

With most folks leasing these days, who cares how long the car lasts? Going to be someone else's problem.

I guess I failed to mention that price is doing it yourself. Walmart Mobile 1 with Ford filter.

I would change now and then every 3500k after. It is $40 piece of mind. Additionally, I would do an oil analysis once per year and send a sample to Blackstone. If you like what you see, you can make adjustments with frequency.

Absolutely agree. Between 3500 and 4500 and use full synthetic and a quality filter. That is what I do with all of my vehicles. For people that put a lot of miles on their vehicles it is a PITA, but you will have fewer problems.

Below is a Ford dealer Master tech at Dundee Ford...For those ofbyou that just follow that "oil life monitor" things or says going to 8000 miles is ok here is what a Master tech at a Ford dealer says and he ACTUALLY cares about the customers vehicles. The Ecoboost engines need sooner oil change intervals than what money hungry Ford recommends for selling points..

It is pretty common knowledge that both the Ford 3 Valve V8 and TT V6 engines are subject to Cam Phaser and other valve train failures / issues (search this site or Google). It appears that those owners that change oil and filter in the 3500 / 4500 mile range have had much less failures and / or problems.

Outside of Fords issues and in general, internal combustion engines have less issues and live longer, the more often you change the oil.

It would be good to backup some of these claims with actual data. I'm all for changing oil every 3k or 5k miles if the engine needs it and the oil is not capable of doing it's job very well above that interval. Changing the oil at lower intervals at some point just wastes money and becomes unnecessary. E.g. if we change oil every 1k miles, will that be materially different than changing it at 3k miles what about 5k or 7k? where does the data point us to highlight the increase in wear of components, failure rates of parts, oil health, etc?
If someone has actual proof that changing the oil half as frequently as recommended is better for these motors, please post it.
If not, I don't understand why people suggest 4k vs 2k?

As a retired Ford Engineer....I hate to blow your paradigm.....but, [the idiots in] marketing and service have more influence on those service intervals than anyone on this forum would be comfortable knowing.....as for oil type, change frequncy and filtration, there is way more good information in multiple places on this forum than in the manual or on the dash. My opinion is that more frequent changes in these vehicles is advisable due to the ridiculously small capacity oil filter if nothing else.

This just reinforces what my mechanic keeps telling me to domoil changes every 5-7k. The manufacture nowadays don't care about vehicle reliability past the warranty period - either buy a new one or start repairing....this ensures constant revenue.

So, the motor oil companies indicate similar, extended, ranges - some showing protection (sic) for 10k miles. If it was a revenue thing, wouldn’t oil companies be recommending more frequent oil changes to increase revenue?

As a side note, many people have done oil analysis, all those who have posted indicate that there is still oil life left at 7-8k or more.

I usually change my oil at around the 6k mark - this is double the ‘ye olde’ 3k number. I’ll be doing an analysis this time around, and note what the in-dash oil change interval says. Currently at 5.5k and around 7 months, showing just under 50% ‘oil life’.

This isn’t a ******* match. But there appears to be no evidence that engine X was damaged because they did 8k oil changes instead of 4k (and I’m in the ‘change oil early rather than later’ boat).

Usually the life of oil is given by the oil producer based on the still parameters done in labolatory after some period of time
For example Motul and Mobil1 for full synt in lab where oil have same condition gives ever over 30 k of life

Base on that car producer give interval

But still - type and quality of oil during last 10 years have change diametrically

This the reason new car have longer intervals

But still - going with oil over 10 k - is insaine
Our car are being driven in reall condition with diffrent temterature, ofen on short distances in city, where becouse of low temperature of engine or oil life cicle is geting shorten by half

Some time ago we have made a experiment
We took 3 oil (full synt/ blenden/ and used full synh)
In both cases (after getting tem up to 210 and when there were about 30) the best parameters have full synth, but still the second was used full synh. Blended in both cases had the worst parameters.

So in my opinion , interval depend on someones opinion and if someone want to pay for often change)
but if it goes to type of oil - I would go only in full synt in new cars

Anyway, he has a 2017 F-150 with 27,000 miles. Told me he's only changed the oil twice!!! I said "Twice!!??" He said he has full synthetic and changes it every 10,000 miles! I almost fell over. Even his wife rolled her eyes. "It's fine" he said. "It's synthetic and I don't drive it much".

Give him a Blackstone kit for his next change. It would be a good UOA data point. I don't think many people are pushing the limits on oil changes like that. Hell, I'm sure some of us would chip in to pay for the test just to see what it comes back with.
