This is my review of this company and the owner/tuner. Though I am only one person, I have found two other current customers dealing with very similar issues.
I have thought this through and debated about what significance, if any, it would have. I decided to go ahead with it mainly because I feel I was not treated fair. I will keep this as short as possible and I am not posting this to bash Justin. But I see a need for this type to be known.
A few months ago I wanted to get another programmer for my 98 Expedition. I have used Superchips a couple of times and though I was happy, I was curious about the custom tunes. After spending countless hours reading up on the benefits of custom vs canned, I decided on custom. After countless hours of reading about which tuner/company to go with on a few forums, I chose Justin and VMP. His rep is at the top and his work is well known. I contacted him via email to basically say hi and I am interested in your SCT/tunes.
About a month or so go by and I send the info along with the tunes I wanted. First issue was the PCM #. I couldn't figure out which one was the correct one. From going to the dealership to sending Justin every number on the PCM. Justin was paid $418.00 and he sent the SCT X3 w/out the tunes.
Being new to custom tunes I was leary about getting it "untuned" when I am used to plug and play. After numerous attempts on my end Justin "made up" a number in order to get the tunes mailed. I get the tunes and see the tunes are not what I wanted/ordered. Specifically the performance tune. I asked for nothing above a 89 tune simply because I was not going to put 91/93 in it. Justin assures me I can still run 89, so no problem.
I load the tunes and run into problems with the tow tune. It feels like it falls on its face and starts out in second gear. So I clear it/take back to stock and load it again. Does fine. I did this with each tune and have the same issue, however each time I clear it to get it right. I,m new but not stupid. All during these steps I was emailing Justin with him replying, but I wanted to have him on the phone so I could do it step by step according to him. I would guess I called Justin 4-5 times and spoke with him once. He was on vacation and would get back in touch with me after he was back. I never heard back until I emailed him again.
I have every email exchanged and my issues were something I feel could have been cleared up in a 20 minute phone conversation. As I mentioned, I was new to custom tunes and I paid for them. But I hoped and still do that if I have a question or problem with a product I bought, I would have someone to go to for help. That is not the case. I asked to send the programmer back with the understanding I would lose money due to the return policy. I asked how much and Justin told me he wanted me to be a happy customer so I waited until the following Monday because he was so busy the week before. He had my phone numbers and email. Monday comes and goes, so Tuesday I email him. Again, this is after i cannot get him on the phone. In a "mature manner", I said I was very unhappy and with the product and the help or lack there of I have received. Still no reply two days later and I said I was going to file a complaint with BBB and I was pissed, point blank.
Without a doubt I know he is busy and has emails/phone calls stacked. However after that email Tuesday night, he refuses to reply to my emails. There is alot more to this and I apologize for the long post, but spending any money for a product and not fully understanding it or having issues such as I had needs to be addressed.
I welcome Justin or anyone else to post and Justin, you have my email and numbers.

Tony

I made an offer to Justin last night to send the programmer back and get a refund. His policy states a 15% re-stocking fee and the custom tunes are non-refundable. He agreed and the programmer was sent back today.

I've always been leary of these so called 'custom tunes' that are done from the other side of the country. It's all guesswork unless they put your truck on a dyno and get gas readings from the exhaust.

My Edge does a great job for the money. I seriously doubt that if I decided to spend an extra $150 on custom tunes, that there would be much bang for that additional buck.

In general, and slightly off topic... I also think that people need to be more realistic about the power gains that you're going to get out of these mod motors in the Expos with simple bolt ons and programmers. You're just not going to coax a bunch more power out of them without spending significant cash on a hi-po rebuild or a supercharger.
Guys are out there spending thousands on all the goodies; headers, tb spacers, mufflers, cold air kits; with the expectations of 25 to 50 more horses appearing, and it's just not going to happen. The fun part is, that if you do pick up some horses on the top end, you end up trading away low end torque for them.

I am not expecting a hot rod or to chirp second gear. I know I wont pick up anything crazy as far as HP, but I did feel a difference and I like it. The tow tune did help and I could feel the bump up in the performance tune. So my expectations are not so high that I will not be happy. As mentioned, I had a Superchips and decided to see what else was out there/try custom tunes. When I was told I could bump the shift pressure up I thought I would see a difference. Also, a firm shift was repeated in more than one email as something I wanted.

A complete tune up was done and I mean complete about 98k miles[all fluids, plugs/wires etc]. Its at 119k now. Its not the vehicle period. I have no reason to think any different. Seeing there is one member here and another on another forum it further proves, to me at least, there is more to the story than just a single issue.
I am not throwing any codes, not running funny and nothing else to lead anyone to believe its my vehicle.
When I ran into the problem with the tune, I cleared everything and loaded it again. So it very well might have been me and the way I loaded it. However when I have a question about it and my only option is to email the tuner, I would hope for a reply to clarify what might have happened. It happened on more than one occasion and not just with me doing it. The tunes were not right when I got them[what I requested] and point blank, I was not happy.

So did you ever get the proper strategy or whatever codes you needed for it to load properly? You had said it was falling on it's face or felt like starting off in second gear, is that working normal yet?

I know that you used to have to have a battery charger hooked up while flashing the computer. They always said to charge the truck/car battery at the same time to prevent errors. I don't know if that would help or not in your case.

I would load the tune and have the issues as mentioned. Then I would clear it[take it back to stock] and reload it. Then it would do fine. I had to do that each time, second time is the charm I guess. So yes, it cleared up.

The strategy code I sent him was not valid according to him. I did some checking and one person said it might of had a new computer put in:confused: and I doubt that is the case. I sent him all of the numbers on the PCM box and none of them worked, so he had to "make one up".

Being I had the issues, I wanted to find out why. That is 75% of my issue with VMP/Justin. I could not get answers or a phone call to talk one on one

I had a similar issue, was told i had the wrong strategy code. I found out that I sent him a number 0 instead of the letter O as one of the digits in my strategy. Simple but frustrating problem.

Tuesday evening Justin replied he would take the programmer back and issue a refund[per his return policy[ and this was around 1230am. I got the email Wednesday morning and the programmer was shipped out UPS Wednesday afternoon.
I sent Justin the tracking info Wednesday evening and ask that my refund be sent out asap after the programmer arrived back to him. I get an email last night around 1230am saying "Ok", but he will be out of town Friday and will not be back until next week. So he has it today[Thursday] and I asked for a tracking number no later than Saturday.
Point to all of this and the reason I keep updating the thread is to show the "customer service" level that I have received. I would openly admit IF I had done anything wrong or said something to him out of line, but I have been respectful and up front the whole time.

I work with Justin almost every day one of the best, if not best tuners in the USA. If he has the right infor. and truck or car in great shape he can tune it. He has never done me wrong and very helpful. I am sorry for your bad experience. I had more than 40 cars tuned by him no problems.

I have no doubt Justin knows his stuff and I would be praising him/his work if this had gone the other way. I believe he is so busy its just impossible to keep up with every single customer and their problems or concerns.

The one and only reason I went to Justin is because of the reviews I read on the forums. I felt confident everything would go smooth and I was even praising him for a vid that was posted on SVTPerformance about a car he tuned. So I came into this with only a positive attitude. My feedback and posts on forums speak for the kind of person I am, and it is not a trouble maker. I have not slammed him or his name, only stated my opinion and the facts. I am in the very small percentage of customers in this type of business that is not happy but still a customer.

Once I get the refund I will wash my hands clean on this incident, but losing money on issues that are not my fault is not an acceptable, but only option.

BTW, I sent any and all info that I had available to me via my vehicle. Even after I sent the strategy code, it was not right according to Justin.
