Hello all-

We're going to be buying a 25' travel trailer with a max weight of 5000 lbs. I've been searching for a suitable tow vehicle and it really seems like the Expedition is a great deal for that purpose.
Some background: It will be a tow vehicle for camping, maybe some winter driving, but definitely not a daily driver, so miles aren't as big a concern as if it was my work truck. I'm buying the trailer and tow vehicle almost at the same time, so I need to keep the price reasonable on the Expedition. I've seen nice Eddie Bauer models from 2003-2006 at around my price point: $10,000 or so with anywhere from 80K to 100K miles on them.
That said, I studied the sticky on what to look for when buying a used one and was hoping you could answer a couple questions before I drop the hammer and go looking to buy one.
1. Aside from the things to look for before buying, are there any long term maintenance issues I'd need to look out for or save up to do? I'm talking tranny work, suspension/joints, etc. Seems like the 5.4 has a reputation for long life, but I'm thinking rust and suspension/underbody are top concerns.
2. I'm learning about the HD trailer package, but I see talk about the pneumatic air-ride and leveling system. Is that a substitute for an aftermarket weight-distributing hitch and sway controller setup?
3. Not to look a gift horse in the mouth, but the Expeditions seem like a great bang for the buck. They're less expensive, with more options and fewer miles than the Chevy/GMC equivalents of the same year. Were there just fewer made, or are people hanging on to theirs longer? I see fewer Expeditions for sale than Tahoes and wonder what's driving supply.

Thanks to all for your help; I look forward to dragging around a nice new camper and will need a reliable, manly vehicle to do it, and as far as I can tell the Expy fits the bill! Might have to install a louder exhaust or push grille as well...

Cheers!

I love my 05, haven't towed with it yet but I don't think I'll have anything to worry about. Mine hasn't given me any problems, I bought it with 105k and its got 121k now with no worries. Good luck!

If I was to buy my truck again I would by the XL version because of the extra room in the back cargo area especially if the 3rd row seating is being used, my 18yr old son plays travel baseball so the back fills up quick between his gear and what we bring to sit at the games like a 12ft canopy, chairs & cooler. Your best bet is to ask owners that you come across at gas stations, parking lots, dealerships. The only other advice is to rent one for a week and see if it fits the bill for your needs vs a 20-30 minute test drive especially drive it during the rainy/nasty weather because that is when you'll be relying on it the most and take your time finding the right one for the color/features/price/milage.

I tow with a 2004 Expedition with the 5.4. I pull a 23' travel trailer that weighs about 5K dry. When loaded it's a bit over 6K.
The only issues I have is the mirrors and the horsepower when your going over steep canyons. The mirrors are an issue because you can't quite see around it, and the the aftermarket ones are almost non-existent for the Expedition.
Other than that, it really is a good stable solution for pulling trailers with a load of bodies too (I have 4 kids.)

I second the EL version of you can. But be sure you get the a real equalizer set up for the trailer you tow. Not the dang torsion/chain things, trust me on this... :\

We love the Expe, I suggested to my wife the other day of possibly trading it in for a newer one because it does have 164k miles on it now, and she would'nt have it. She likes that it can do the work of a minivan and a truck.

My two cents... Good luck!
