Posted on another Ford site I belong to. I've seen / read some info about data metrics collected in new Ford vehicles being shared (sold) to insurance companies, but if all this is true it becomes pretty scary.

I think we’ve passed peak vehicle. All the new tech isn’t enhancing the driver experience. It’s just added driver annoyances and data collection.

I didn’t watch the video.

GM also had problems with the data they were collecting and selling through OnStar: https://gmauthority.com/blog/2026/0...ar-were-watching-and-selling-your-every-move/

It seems to me that the issue would be simple for the courts and the NHTSA - I buy a vehicle and it is mine. The manufacturer has no right to collect personal data (and other optics) from the vehicle and sell it to others without my permission.

I understand that data must be used to help the vehicle function (mapping, automatic crash response, automated driving, etc.), but I don’t understand how the manufacturers are permitted to collect and sell data to others (without consent of the vehicle owner or a court order / search warrant)?

That's very interesting. It certainly is going to make a lot of people read the fine print on the terms of the services that vehicles offer, like Ford Blue Cruise or their in vehicle network, for example.

It is absolutely not proper and should be illegal, but collecting peoples data and selling it to others has been going on since the early days of Google. This is the same story, except digging deeper into our personal lives. The automotive and insurance lobbyists do their thing in Washington and none of the people that supposedly represent our interests stand in the way.

When insurance for our 3 daily drivers is renewed each year we are offered a fairly substantial discount to have the ODBII monitors in our vehicles. No thanks, data can always be and frequently is taken out of context. If you slam on your brakes or make an abrupt sharp turn to avoid an accident, those actions taken out of context can be considered dangerous driving, instead of actually preventing 2 accidents.

Yea, and that's where they get you.....they know they can make way more money from selling your data that the little bit of money will they lose on those "significant discounts"...

Funny that this was brought up now, since just earlier today, I was shopping for new insurance, and guess what....

ALL 3 of the companies I got quotes from offered the same thing, and I IMMEDIATELY said: not no, not hell no, but F*ck no....they already know too much about me & my family as it is, so I will deprive them of the very prize they seek....:D

The Florida home owners insurance companies are pulling something similar. They will pay or rebate 125.00 if you sign off and allow the company to choose who will repair and choose the material used to rebuild your property. The insurance companies don't tell you its buried in all the legal speak. After you sign it you are screwed. Read those pia policies carefully.

Yeah, we have a place in FL and both the auto and homeowners insurance situation there is very difficult. We keep a 2011 Expy with 67K miles there for which we pay $1800 a year. Out 2017 Expy in NY with 65K and same coverage is $880 a year. Not just hurricane risk, but the ambulance chasing industry in FL is a substantial contributing factor to auto insurance costs.

With our homeowners there are paying about 3x from when we purchased the place 12 years ago. Currently with Florida Peninsula and their latest trick is a tag which must be placed on the main water shutoff. Has 800 number, if you have a leak and don’t call the 800 number before bringing in a plumber or contractor, then coverage is automatically limited to 5K. Total B/S.

We have always had a nationwide company, Amica. We've had them for over 50 years on our property in MA and here in Fl. No problem at all even after a 400K claim for hurricane damage a couple of years ago. These small companies are pretty much in FL and if they get hit with a big lose they pay some of it and then fold up and disappear. Only to show up with under a new name and bust out again. It is a cottage industry here. Where are you in Fl?

We have used Travelers for our house and 2 daily drivers in NY for 25 years but they don't / won't insure the house and car in FL. Amica has been sending me emails and letters for a year or so, but when I checked their prices for NY they were quite a bit more. Maybe I'll reach out to them to see if they will do the FL house and car as a bundle.

The class action suit against GM involving collection of data is proceeding, after an important court ruling: https://gmauthority.com/blog/2026/05/gm-onstar-lawsuit-to-continue-in-court/

Most insurance is a scam. My last home owners had my house WAY over valued and my out buildings under valued and one completely uninsured. I switched to All State along with 2 cars at a bit of a savings, but my out buildings are covered. I got a quote for my small motorhome, they were way higher than progressive so I kept progressive. State Farm contacted the state saying that I dropped the insurance and PA wants me to send in my motorhome plate.

East Coast in Jupiter. Do you deal direct with Amica or through an agent?

We are in Flagler Beach about on the county line with Volusia.

We have always dealt with the company. They have a building in Orlando. In some areas they are a bit more pricey but the service is fantastic and quick. They use their own adjusters on most losses. More importantly they don't mess you around.
