What the HECK is this on the back side of the center console?

On the ceiling between driver and passenger seats.
At least mine are in my '98EB. Perfect placement! That way on the ice cold winter mornings I can blast the heater on me and blast the A/C on my pre-teenagers. Muahahaaha

I have that one too except it's located just below my auto climate control on my dash, in the center console to be exact... They would be on the ceiling except I have a sunroof. To be clear, mine has three sets of controls, my front climate controls, a front mounted rear passenger control, and a rear mounted rear passenger control.

But my rear seat passengers have a set of controls where that thingy is, where are the controls the rear passengers are able to adjust, on the ceiling?

My controls are the same spot as yours. But I have no sun roof. And I have done the same thing to the kids when they are especially whiny....

My 97 had this holder thing my 02 doesn't as the rear HVAC controls are their. My guess is with the sunroof they can't be up top

I keep small out-of-the-way, don't forget items there. Also use it to hang my sunglasses that have the adjustable glasses strap-works quite well.
My rear controls are in the overhead.

you won't find it in the 2001 manual That center console is in the 97-99 expeditions also there is no mention of that holder in any of the owners manuals for those years

Yes, on the ceiling. The only thing on the back of the goofy console are the radio controls. And maybe an ash tray...
I cna think back to being a kid in the 80's and thinking how funny it was that cars had ash trays in the back seats. Did the car manufacturers actually think kids were going to be smoking back there??? Well, maybe in Arkansas and possibly Georgia. LOL

That reminds me. When it's REALLY cold, I turn on the REAR heat and turn the vents so they angle on the my neck! Heats up QUICK!
