Has anyone removed the cup holders for the port side, 3rd row seating area? Any idea what's below them? From the vertical edge of the interior wall to the sheet metal is a significant width and I'm wondering if I can fit some electronics in there forward of the sub woofer.

Moss, you’ve found my secret storage location! Pop up the cup holders and pop off the trays on both sides and you’ll find gobs of room. I have all of my emergency tow straps, heavy gauge jumper cables, flares, safety vest, and a bunch of other junk below those plastic shrouds. In fact, I removed my jack and tire tools from the shallow well in the floor, and put them in there too. So now I have a shallow well for my groceries to sit in. Best mod to my truck so far. So yes, explore in there...you’ll be thrilled by the amount of room inside. I’ll try to take pics today of my setup.

I have a 2015 Expediton Limited 4x4.

Does the cup holder assembly simply lift out? Is there sound insulation inside this cavity? Thank you.

On my ‘15 EL Limited the cup holders just pop out. Also the trays lift out too. And yes there’s some sound insulation in there but not much. Here’s some photos. Not sure how much they will help, but I can tell you I have tons of random emergency junk in these areas and have room to spare.

Muddy, I'm going to be installing a 2kW HD inverter in there. Will need to do some custom cuts to that shroud for the unit and air ducting. Also need to route 1/0 cable from the engine bay to that area. I'll update once it's under way.

A bit of a job taking those side panels off if you'd like to completely remove them. You have to take off the rear trim and the rear seat belts. The right side contains the rear heat and a/c if equipped, under the tray. The left side contains the sub-woofer housing, again if equipped. I took my XLT's left side apart to install a factory sub woofer and Ford amp. I removed the right side tray to replace the blend door actuator motor twice.

Good to know. I don’t plan on removing the side panel. I’ll be making some strategic cuts into it, however.

Muddy, what is that in the small side door you have the Repell in? I have an 05 and nothing in that hole behind the door.

That’s the access panel for the motor that lifts and closes the liftgate. The automatic opening and closing liftgate was an option. If you don’t have that, it would explain why you don’t have that little door panel..

Muddy, could you explain how to "pop up" the cup holders and the trays? Haven't tried to remove the trays yet, but both the 1- and 2-cup holders are in there pretty tight. I've tried simply grabbing the cup holders to pop them out, no joy.

You have to reef them out. They merely pop out but you have to use some muscle.
