Dropped it off, will find out the verdict and update tomorrow. Mentioned both the whirring and the creaking, they should have no problem hearing both.

Shop called, it’s inspected and noises are all gone. All I got so far was front end parts were replaced. I’ll know when I go pick her up.

That’s good, at least those Ford hub and bearing assemblies I put in the rear weren’t the issue.

Curious to know what the cause was. Any news since you picked it up yesterday?

Yes sorry I forgot. They replaced the CV Shaft Assembly in the front. Fixed the noises!

I use 4WD quite often so they get their share of use.
I expect to be coming up on that in the near future. I try to stay ahead of issues and the CV axles & driveshafts are pretty much the only untouched driveline parts on my truck right now.

How many miles on your truck?

Well I’d like to apologize, I lied. According to the bill they replaced the intermediate steering shaft, not CV shaft. I’ve been running like mad the last few days and just now got around to checking the expy out. Popped the hood and a new ford shaft installed. I swore they verbally told me CV shaft, but I was incorrect. Made sense to me because use of 4A.

The road noise they noted to a combo of little things and replaced some misc parts and went over suspension. Tires are marginally noisy is noted on bill.

I’ll be ditching the coopers soon anyway, they’ve been noisy since day 1 and apparently are only getting louder.

I appreciate the clarification. I'm at 166k miles and like knowing what's possibly ahead of me in terms of repairs.

Now these things are failing? Since when? I never replaced on in my life, and I've had all my cars to at least 250K miles.
No reported failures is a clue to the design engineers that the component is over-designed, and so they change the design to save money.

This has been a very common failure for the f150 and expeditions.

Corrosion starts in the U joints of the shaft and they stiffen up causing noise and tight steerinf

I was unaware this is a common failure. Made some unsettling noises when steering at low speeds that’s for sure.

Yeah Fordtechmakulo did a video about it. That's the only reason I knew about it.

The steering is almost too smooth, I miss the old harsh truckish steering lol.

I noticed in his video he said steering loosens up as it warms up when the shaft goes bad. I had that symptom as well. He also mentioned the hydraulic steering parts are reliable and rarely fail, it’s usually this.

Did they put back on a Ford or aftermarket part? If aftermarket, that may explain the looser steering feel. I change a leaky worn rack on my 86 Mustang GT years back. Didn't like the looser feel of the aftermarket rack, but it was in, and I just lived with it. The OEM one had a nice firm feel, the aftermarket one felt like driving a 4 door sedan.
