I win.... :p

As of right now, 263,910. I commute 84 miles each way to work, and rack up the miles fast. Original owner, engine never ever been opened, original engine and tranny. Items replaced: water pump, fuel pump, 3 coil packs, brakes, tires, belt, plugs, etc...

This photo taken last month.

I think I'm the mile supreme king!

Folks,

I was just browsing when I came across this posting.........Well, I have a 97 XLT, 4.6L, with app 378,000 miles! Original engine, original tranny.......Right now it is in the shop, because the orginal ac compressor finnally blew and the cluth locked up........Needless to say, I need a whole new ac system, so as soon as I pick it up over the weekend, I will post pics for proof......I bought it in 99 with app 34,000 miles, but the rest is all me............I will definitely vouch for any first gen Expedition. As long as you do the basic maintainance, including fluid changes, she'll run forever......Don't stab at the gas at lights so you won't put undo stress on the tranny, and it will wear down progressively with the engine........Pics to come!

Wow that's impressive and inspiring, you are now the new winner of the mile contest. I had to replace my a/c compressor around 60k miles so you should feel good that yours lasted that long, although mine was only leaking internally. Since you have so many miles on the original engine, I have to ask what kind of oil do you use and how often do you change? Also, who has done most of the work on your truck over the years?

Smoothride,

Honestly, 75-90% of the time, I ran mobil 1 or castrol oil.......Up until 06, I lived in DC, so I changed oil weight between summber/winter......I never invested in synthetic because I've had a slow oil leak for the past 6-7yrs, and was just too lazy to get it fixed (I believe it's the oil coolant line seals)..The length between oil changes varied, anywhere between every 4,000-6,000 miles...The mile came so fast, I would forget, but changing every 3,000 miles is truly not necessary.....Just keep check on your fluid levels every 1500 miles or so and you'll be straight....Man, the night the clutch locked up, it left me stranded at a gas station, and at that point, I thought the engine locked up.....I was prepared to just bury it since it had given me plenty miles.....
All in all, it's partial luck for me, because I'm sure there are plenty of owners who do all the right things, and there engine/tranny go way before its time...Most of the maintainence has been done by trusted mechanics at shops or Pep Boys......I've never once, outside of the first few scheduled maintenances have taken it to the dealer........I change my own brakes/rotors, change most of my own fluids with the exception of the diff fluid. Hope this helps.

Oh and another thing, first gen 4x4 models tend to go thru front ball joints every 80,000 miles or so, and since you can only buy it with the upper control arm attached, your front end should be pretty stout every time you have both changed.......Never ignore that squeaking noise over bumps.....That's a tell tell sign.

@ Bart Man,

How do you like those Terra Grapplers? I thought about getting those during my last purchase...Are they loud? how's the wear?

I also have the terra grapplers and they are very quiet and wear well with my agressive driving (I think I have 40k miles so far). My only complaint is they don't seem to have good traction on wet roads... what do you think bartman?
