Why an Ex?

Why go for an EX...because I did the GM Vortec engine cooling problem thing and then tried the Dodge Durango bearings and discs thing.....all of that was too much money to try to pull a 6000 lbs travel trailer! We chose a 2003 EX EB with all the gadgets and love the space.....cheaper than the Nav.

The mileage we get ouy of our heavier EX is 20% better than the Dodge, pulling or not.

PS: I nearly waited for the 2004 Durango but did not want to have to deal with new model reliability at Chrysler.

No doubt. The Dodges get HORRIBLE gas mileage. I have an '01 QC RAM 4x4 with the 5.2L. It's been a good truck so far but one things it SUCKS.................gasoline. Get's about 10 no matter where or how I drive it.

I think you made a wise choice. We almost waited for the 2004 Durango too. But we got an offer we couldn't refuse on this 2003 X. And like you said, why put up with the reliability issues of a second gen Dodge.

I drive a '99 Eddie Bauer currently at ~60k miles. Its been a great vehicle, the only time I've spent money other than to change the oil is recently when some sort of fuel pressure valve went bad - cost me $350 in the shop. I even got a new set of Michelin's out of Ford at around 35k miles!

I bought it as combo family hauler + toe a 3800lb boat. Works great for both. I do miss the truck I traded in on it tho. I'm probably going to trade for an '04 F150 this fall. If I were in the market for another SUV, I'd definitely buy a Ford again. I've owned 5-6 in the last 30 years, and never had any major problems. Some minor ones yes, but I nothing that I wouldn't expect any mechanical piece of equipment to experience over time.

I drive Fords because I believe they are engineered well, and I appreciate that because I am an engineer myself. Also like the styling much better than GM or Toyo products! Dodge makes some nice-looking trucks, but the only real truck on the road is a Ford!

I drive a 99 XLT 5.4L LLRS with 114k miles on her now. The only things that I have had to do is replace 2 coils packs of which one was my fault (got it wet when cleaning the motor)and plugs, the upper control arm / ball joints. I did started running a super chip, k&n filter (stock replacement), electric fan kit, cobra r water pump @ 52k miles or so. And I got a good increase in my power and gas mileage. Throttle response is alot better now and my stift points are better and less lag time between gears. (thanks to the chip).

I do alot of long distance driving so much that last year I was getting the oil changed every 6-7 weeks (which sucked).

I absolutely love my X.

In Jan '99 I did my research on an Explorer and decided to buy a white Eddie Bauer Explorer.
At the dealership I noticed the EB explorer stickered at $37K+.
Noticed the EB Expedition stickered at $41K with more options.
Felt the Expy was a better value and safer vehicle for $3K more after haggling on both.

I too did the same...researched all the SUV's in the market. Ford, by far, offered the most bang for the buck with the Expedition. I have been a chevy owner for the longest time (still have my 84 GMC 3/4 ton pickup) and they just are cheaply engineered. Even the 4.8/5.3 powerplants have issues with engine noise and not enough towing power. The Expy is King.

Last but not least is the ride. The independent suspension rides beautifully. They did a nice job engineering this to a truck frame.

I too did a bunch or research. I was not very impressed with the Chevy's. The Suburban was given some thought, but the dash and interior just looked "cheesy". The Expy dash was nice and clean looking (our 2000). Plus the Ex would fit in the garage. The wife didn't want to have to shovel snow away from a Suburban in the Colorado winter....just to get in! The 2000 was a good vehicle for us, but with me getting a bit older and having back issues, it got to be a bit much to always remove our 3rd row seat for camping trips. Also, storing it, just took up too much space. We just got a 2003 with the power fold seats....very nice so far. Also, have a tent trailer we tow.

Glad you asked....

I bought my 2001 XLT because of its looks.

I like this particular model and trim because of the body style and the fact that does not have flares like the EB's do.

I probably wouldn't buy a newer Expedition (I don't like the squarish look of the newer models nor the plastic bumpers).

The other option I considered was the Denali. (I've always considered myself a Chevy guy mainly due to the pathetic perfomance of my uncle's 89 escort)

My only complain about the Expy is the location of the oil filter. Not only it is difficult to get the darn thing off, it's virtually impossible to do so without spilling oil and making a mess.

What were they thinkin!!!?

Other than that, I'm impressed with the Expy's reliability and solid performance.

I drive an Expedition because my wife didn't want me to get another Excursion. :(

Nice truck (the 03) just not a lot of visceral appeal to me. It's underpowered but I never really miss the "missing ponies" on a daily basis. Do wish they were there though...

I think Ford trucks & SUVs are engineered stronger than the competition.

i got my Expy because i needed something to tow my Civic to the track and couldnt stand my Accord anymore. i wanted something that i could run over stuff with. my accord was slammed to the ground, turboed, loud and it got annoying having peole look at you all the time. so i bought what i used to make fun of. a blue oval. and now i love my Ford

We needed a family wagon and I don't drive minivans. After looking at SUVs we decided the Ford Expy had the stuff we wanted. We bought a 2003 XLT Premium through CarsDirect.com

Great price and great ride. No problems except for the brake dust.

I'm on my second Expedition. Started with an XLT then traded up to EB. Having 3 dogs and a bird, we like having all the room (once 3rd seat is removed) to cart our "family" around with us when we travel. I had a Honda Accord before and I can't imagine going back to using a vehicle that has me practically sitting on the road. The Expedition makes me feel more protected and that the world is more visible. All that, plus I got 0.9% interest on the financing. Who could say no to that kind of deal????

My husband just got a new F150 Lariat Super Crew. It seems to be just like my Expedition, except that the bed is open. He had a nice ARE bed cover installed so it looks pretty sharp.

Unless something drastic happens, I plan to eventually trade for a new Expedition. And I'll probably do just like I did the last time........never get behind the wheel until the paperwork is signed. I felt that secure in what I was buying and have had no regrets since.

My 98 Eddie Bauer came in to the Used Car Lot where I work and it was love at first sight. I have only had two Fords in the past, a 1986 F-150 PU which was an excellent truck and a 1983 T-Bird. My wife has a 2000 Ford Taurus, 42000 miles, and once we got all of the warranty work done prior the expiration date it turned in to a great car. My wife drove the Expediton and fell in love just like I did. The ride, the room, the looks did it for us. I traded a 1994 GMC Sonoma 4x PU and a 1995 GMC 4dr JImmy straight across for the Eddie Bauer. It puts me in the Expediton about 10,500 which is 2000.00 below book. It has 110,000 miles and runs and looks new. Sorry for the long post, but the excitement has not worn off yet. Larry in Nevada

As a European expatriate living in the Philippines, I bought an XP (2001 XLT) because first because I like its look, then I wanted a safe and sturdy car for a reasonable. I had an apprehension to drive a "big and clumsy American car" (sorry guys, coming from Europe, we're not used to SUVs and big V8s which look like trucks ;) ) but I was and still am positively surprised and satisfied, it drives really well, it's very comfy and reliable. Competition here is mainly Japanese SUV (Pajero, Patrol, Land Cruiser, etc.), which actually come more expensive and not close in terms of comfort, engine quality and look. And on top of everything, dealers are fair and nice to their customers.

I drove them all first. Well almost all. I think the quality of the import offerings are way over rated. I had an import car that was a piece of junk.

I also asked around and found out the chevy had service problems, the durango loved gas and had front end problems, and all the others were either too big or too small. My expy is just the right size. I would consider me a ford fanatic. My work truck is f150, play truck is a f250 pwerstroke, my wifes car is a 95 explorer, and now the expedition! (Oh yeah, my farm tractor is a ford also.)

The last and final reason was I know fords. Have serviced and worked on them for years. In commparing that to the other brands was very important. Fords are easy to work on and the parts usually aren't too high.

I've had 2 Dodges( a Ram Quad 4x4 and a Dakota V8 4x4), 1 Isuzu Trooper and a Tahoe. I went with the Ford Expy for a couple of reasons. I like the quality of the Ford over the Dodge and Chevy. The Dodge, while they were good sound vehicles, were not as well made as the ford. The Trooper, well it was a Isuzu and was okay. The Tahoe was a pig and I had quite a few, albeit small, problems wit it.

The Ford looks good, drives like a car and has good towing specs. Then the 0% deals came in and well that sold me.
