Windshield is getting a lot of abuse

My 2017 Limited Expedition is a really good looking vehicle; I get a lot of compliments on it.
But...................................
My windshield has a 'star' damage and a lot of nicks in it !!!!!!!!!!
Very unattractive
IS THIS THE NEW NORMAL???
It seems like anything with a bit of 'consistency' to it nicks the windshield.
In the 'olden days' windshields didn't seem to damage so easily???
Makes me think that today's windshields are 'softer' or something.....

They definitely are more prone to chips and minor scratches according to the tech from Safe-Lite who has repaired windshields in both of my cars in the last 6 months. Started quite a while back. He claims it was new formulations to meet pedestrian strike standards. Who knows but I have not been able to polish the windshield to crystal clear clarity like I used to. Still see specks. As my eyes get older I tend to care a lot less!!
