i have a problem that my 97 EB expy WILL go into "aw4x4, but not high or low. what do you think could be the cause. a friend told me theres a little motor that engages all that so... but my S-10 had vacume lines and a manual shifter in the floor/ plunger under the hood on the passengers side. hummm. any ideas? although it does go into a4x4 its still annoying...

Yup we have recent threads here about this same issue and how to diagnose and replace for around $150 or less. Thread says things like "check the fuse" and "use a volt meter to .." blah blah blah 1.21 gigawatts . . .

If you know the thread, post the link. I would start by checking the fuse as was said, it is fuse 104 under the hood on the 1st gen expy's. I think if the fuse were bad you would not see any A4WD either, although I am not positive. Otherwise next thing would be the transfer case shifter motor or the switch inside the cabin. I think the A4WD uses a magnetic clutch to operate while the 4x4 high and 4x4 low are mechanical operations within the transfer case.
