hi all first time poster here, about to purchase a platinum 2018 or 2019, but have a question. my wife is pretty fixed on the idea that she wants to run snow tires during the winter months, she currently drive a jeep grand cherokee summit and we were able to find a good deal on a limited trim 18" take offs that we setup up with nokian winter tires. my idea would be to find some take offs xlt 18" and use those during the winter months on the platinum.

does anybody know of any limitation to run 18" wheels on a platinum trim? On the jeep I wasn't able to run 17" due to the heavy duty brake calipers that come standard on the 5.7 HEMI, so I want to make sure this is possible.

ebay is full of both f150 and some expedition xtl 18" wheels so it shouldn't be a problem to find some take offs which I prefer instead of aftermarket, I like to keep the OEM looks.

Im planning on running these that I used to run on my 2010 f150. 17”.

Brakes from 2009 f150 have not changed and are the same on the 2015+ f150 and 2018 Expedition.

I can't guarantee you 100%, and I doubt Ford would provide a firm answer either, but we went through the same thought process. As long as the overall tire diameter is the same, it won't affect your speedometer or require re-calibration. Expeditions come from the factory with 18-inch, 20-inch, and 22-inch wheels. The only difference is the tire sidewall height. This means that, at least in theory, any of these wheels should be interchangeable.

Now, with that said, if your Platinum has CCD (which is standard) it's possible a different tire/wheel combination *might* affect some of the calculations the system makes. But, I do know for a fact that some '15-'17 Navigators came equipped with both CCD and 20-inch wheels. That means the "rule" that CCD always gets paired with 22-inch wheels might be more of an aesthetic consideration rather than a practical one. This leads me to believe a smaller wheel diameter should not adversely affect the CCD system.

In fact, I'd bet that you should see *improved* ride quality with CCD suspension and 18-inch wheels with smooth-running tires that have a taller sidewall. (Then again, good Winter tires may not be as smooth riding, so that might not be a factor here.)

I’ve been pondering all this lately as well. I have the 22” on my Limited Max with CCD. I’d like to go to 18” wheels with some more aggressive tires. I already scuffed one of my 22” wheels while parking my Expy in the dark at a camp site. Not that I care about the scuff, which is not even noticeable, it’s just an annoying reminder of what can happen. And I don’t like the 22” wheels that came with the Expy anyway.

Only reason I’m questioning the wheel swap is because of the CCD. I’d like to know if anyone has done it and how it’s working for them.

I thought a member here had the dealership swap some 18"wheels onto his Platinum before buying it?

I switched from 22's to the Limited 20" wheels on my 302A Limited with CCD to have more sidewall, and it rides very nicely. I also got a separate set of 20" Expedition XLT wheels for my Nokian snow tires. The biggest issue with any F150 wheels, is that you'll either have to leave the rear center caps off, or shorten the rear axle shafts to clear the wheels. The Expedition wheels are meant to accommodate the longer Expedition rear axle shafts, so that's why I decided to go that route. See the attached snow tire thread:

I did this for a 2016 SS Camaro. It comes standard with summer tires. The rear tires are larger than the front as well. I downsized to the same as the base model camaro with all 4 being the same size for winter. I went through this with folks at Tirerack.com where I purchased the winter tires.

It worked out nicely. I didn't pay the extra $300+ for new TPS in the winter tires. I just ignored the tire low indicators and checked pressure the old fashioned way for the winter.

So contact a tire store expert if no one responds here. I do recommend the tirerack folks because they knew exactly what I was talking about and had the answers.

Good luck.

Just played around on their site. You should have no problems but if you are going to buy winter tires to mount on those rims give them a call.

RE: TPMS I go through this every year with my 2017 (and for 7 years before that with my 2009). I have a second set of wheels with Winter tires and suitable TPMS sensors. I have a tire store do the swap each Fall. When they do that, I ask them not to "re-learn" the TPMS because both sets of wheels are present on the truck at the same time. If TPMS gets reprogrammed at the time of the swap, it appears to work for a short time but later the TPMS light comes on and it has to be done again.

So, once I get the Summer tires unloaded and stored in the garage, I go back to the tire store and have them reprogram the TPMS for the Winter tires. It then works just fine until it's time to do it all over again come Spring.

This is my first Ford so please forgive my ignorance...
Do you know if there's a process that we can do at home in the garage to link the TPMS to the vehicle without going to the tire shop?
Every one of my GM vehicles had the ability for me to do this. It saved me time and money, swapping my own winter and summer tire/wheel sets.

My experience has been that you would need your own TPMS tool to train the sensors and update the vehicle computer if you want to perform the update at home. Even if you had two sets of wheels and the TPMS sensors were cloned to match, you'd lose the functionality of knowing which tire pressure was assigned to which tire since the vehicle computer has a TPMS sensor assigned by ID tag number to each of the 4 tire locations. As soon as you rotate tires without reassigning the sensor location, the tire specific pressure readings won't match the display on the instrument cluster. It obviously would still alert you to a low pressure situation, but you'd have to figure out which tire was affected by manual inspection instead of being able to look at the instrument cluster pressure readings.

All that being said, I run down to my local tire shop and pay the guy $10 twice a year to reprogram my sensors when I swap summer and winter tires.

My wife's Lexus HS250H has (caveat below) a feature where they can store 2 full sets of TPMS sensors, and you switch between them with a button under the glove box. Great idea for Northern climates!

Caveat: only available in the US. Canadian versions don't get this feature because... well, who knows why...

I'm going to add this idea to the "Ford are you listening..." thread. Should be mandatory on all vehicles as far as I'm concerned.
