So my '19 is in the shop at 83000 miles getting its cam phasers replaced due to 1 minute+ of rattling at cold start.

shop said engine was generally in quite good condition. it had the old style phasers, but there was evidence of previous engine service... specifically, this was the crank pulley.

guessing the phasers were already replaced once, probably on warranty, but before the 'new' style phasers were available, and the dealer mechanic mangled it.

phasers etc before this service,

phasers etc after this service...

anyways, off to pick it up at the shop, I dropped it off Monday AM, and its all wrapped up this AM except cleaning, which they said would be done by noon. This is at an independent, I wouldn't trust my local Ferd dealer to do an oil change without messing something up. I asked around various local Indies, these guys, who I already respected, told me they've done this job a half dozen times already, and would put their best Ford engine guy on the job. Price of this was kinda ouch, but knowing its being done 'right' is worth it.

I see the mangled crank pulley part, but for those who aren't that familiar with the insides of our engines, can you please point out the bad part in the 1st photo as compared to the 2nd one ?

The 1st phasers look somewhat physically different from the 2nd ones, were they just a different brand/model, or were they installed backwards ?

Also, are those guides/covers on the timing chain made of plastic, which would make ZERO sense to me, or are they a black anodized/painted metal ? It's hard to tell from the pics, but this is the 1st time I've seen any pics of this part of an actual Expy engine, so please humor me :D

the first photo, the phasers with the naked springs, those were the original ones used on 2018-2021 or -22 ... the 2nd photo are the updated ones that came out in 2022 or 2023.

all new parts were FoMoCo, and the kit for this job includes a LOT of them, even the water pump gets replaced. new timing chains, new guides, etc.

overhead cam timing chain guides are plastic on just about every engine I've seen. There's a guy on youtube "I Do Cars" who tears down old engines, I've watched dozens of teardowns of all sorts of things.

the mangled crank pulley is pretty good evidence that this was already done once as these phasers tended to die in 40k miles, and mine has 83k... its been rattling at cold start for a few months.

anyways, before this repair, I was getting horrible MPG... took the Exp 30 or 40 miles up the coast today, going steady 55 MPH on cruise, and averaged about 20 MPG, which is just about twice what I was seeing, although admittedly I didn't do a 55 MPH test run like this. Gorgeous day on the San Mateo coast. I turned around at the Pigeon Pt Lighthouse.

Thanks for that info, it makes more sense to me now. I don't understand why they would have made the original phasers with the springs exposed like that, as the new ones certainly seem alot more robust looking, at least to me anyways...hell it even has the "T" mark clearly visible, which I am guessing stands for "Top Dead Center" like in the old days before DOHC's were invented :)

Still not sure about those plastic guides though, I would think that would be a recipe for disaster should one of them become brittle (which all plastic does eventually) and crack, break and/or shatter into little pieces, but I supposed that could also happen to metal ones too, if they existed....

the TDC marks on the phasers are the dimples and white dots, two of them are next to the yellow links in the timing chains.

The engine you NEVER want to work on is the 4.2L Audi/VW V8... This is on the TRANSMISSION side, so to work on it, you have to remove the engine from the car entirely.

I think there's 5 or 6 timing chains in there.
Wow, if I didn't know better, that is what folks up my way call a "conglomerated clusterflook", but I guess if it works, then so be it....but NO, I would NOT ever, ever wanna have to work on, or have work done on, something of that ilk....
