So 2 pieces need to be in play. You have to have Sync 3 version 3.0+ and the version of Waze that supports it. As of the last time I checked the app it does not support Applink yet.

my nav seems to update, either through some weird gennie or ??/ i say this as restaurants i like in san antonio were not there last year, but this dec we were there and i typed in said place to dine and it showed ones that were not there last visit?
something is updating, but i have no idea what

Looks like Waze interaction with AppLink will be coming in April. I saw the original announcement in January and was then told that compatibility was being "rolled out", but I haven't been able to make it work. It sounds like maybe that's because it's not April yet.

This has been clarified multiple times. 2 Things have to happen, an update to Sync, most likely the full release of Sync 3, 3.0. Then Waze has to release an app update. Neither have happened.
