Just for closure, it was the starter motor at fault. New one has been installed and the V8 is alive once more

Agreed.

Searching "PATS" lists many threads with conditions similar to those described by the OP. Solutions that are found there (PATS related or otherwise) might help steer the guy to a fix. Worth a look.

But for future reference, when I put my lightning cluster in to look at it, I tried starting it. It turns over, just doesn't actually fire.
