Hi all and Merry Christmas,
I'm have a slight issue with my 06 expedition 5.4L. There seems to be some misfires, only when the engine is under load (when going up hill with low revs). The misfires ONLY occur when the RPM is under around 1500 RPM and under load. It's getting to the point I have to push the accelerator to downshift to get the misfires to go away, or the engine stutters too much under load.
I have around 128k on the truck and everything is perfectly fine except for this misfire problem.
Could anyone point me in the right direction in identifying the problem or a possible fix?
Thanks very much,
Danny

There has been no CEL light. I'll try replacing the plugs and coils and see if that fixes it up. Thanks for the reply!

Keep us posted please. Thanks!

My 04 is getting coils and plugs real soon. Hoping to see some additional pickup and would be great to see 1 MPG back!

Sounds like a tune up for sure! Spark plugs wires/coils. Also a good time to change your fuel filter and run some fuel system cleaner. The sooner you get this done the better!

6K when you do the 100K tune up what do you or anyone on this forum do? please tell me if I am missing something.
1.Plugs
2.Coils
3.Oil well when you need to replace it of course

I mean what else is there that needs replacing? Is there a sensor that I need to replace?

Well, it really depends on what has been done recently. Maybe between 80-100k miles.

Sensors don't really have a life span, they just will fail, luckily most of these will come with a check engine light.

Plugs
Wires/Coils (if you feel this is neccessary to replace)
Fuel Filter
Air Filter
Brakes and Rotors
Inspect ALL fluids if any shows signs of dirty, flush and refill.
Inspect and replace all belts if neccessary
Inspect for any leaks, worn out bushings, seals etc.
Test Battery and Alternator (usually want to do around winter as well)
****The One People usually don't do****CHANGE OUT TIMING BELT
Check Compression

Other than that, just the little stuff like check tire pressure, do you need alignment, light bulbs, A/C working, everything else working like it should that needs attention.

My rule of thumb is, treat your vehicle at 100K miles as if it were a brand new car. If you take a relatively small amount of time to go over it all, your vehicle will go another 100K miles with typical maintenance with the exception of maybe a transmission. 100K miles doesn't mean it's done for, it just means more things should be replaced to bring it back to life. It's really true, the better you care for your car the longer it will seem like a new car.

Timing belt?
Haha!!!

Also need to flush out transfer case n rear diff. Power steering fluids, and brake fluids for sure. Back flush heater core and replace coolant.
Check brake lines (rubber) for signs of cracks. Check and repair any and all leaks. refresh all rubber seals around doors, sun roofs, ETC....

I'm in for plugs. I used to get the misfire when trying to accelerate. Changed them all out and the truck has been running like a champ ever since.

Hi all, sorry for the super late response, but I ended replacing the cp's and the spark plugs as per suggestion and it fixed all of the problems I've been having. The spark plugs were a MAJOR PITA to do, 7 out of the 8 broke requiring the leslie tool. Another unrelated problem arose a day after I replaced the CP and the spark plugs. The engine would dangerously just shut off in the middle of the road and the dashboard message showed "engine fail safe mode" or something. Turns out it was the throttle body. I just took it to a shop for this job and they ended up replacing the whole throttle body which fixed the problem. It was a dangerous experience having the engine just shut off in the middle of the road losing power steering. Ford should definitely redesign their fail safe parameters to not have the engine randomly shut off in the middle of the road for something like this.
