2012 Expediton 2 questions

my vehicle has a heavy duty towing package. When I hook my 21' trailer up the my suv to haul will my trailer brakes automatically work or will I need to add anything else to my suv....also I have a low tire light that come on..all tire pressures are holding. I check these daily. It goes on and off...How do I know which one is bad...I am getting new tires in the morning. Can they check which one is bad

Welcome to the Forum.

The tire store can check to make sure all of your TPMS sensors are communicating with the vehicle. If not and they can't get them to sync, they can sell you new ones. Sensors are good for 5 -7 years and then the batteries in them wear out.

Some of the earlier model Expeditions you had to add a separate brake controller to control the trailer brakes. The new ones have it built in. I don't think the 12 has it but you can check your owner's manual. The integrated brake controller was optional in 2013+ models, and wasn't available in <2012 models.

1st welcome to the forum

If you need a brake controller get a good one Primus IQ or better make sure it is a proportional controller.

If you have problems with either the turn signal or running lights not working check the fuses and relays in the battery junction box under the hood make sure they are installed

You can check your owners manual to see what fuses and locations to check

My 16 platinum has a +/- brake control just to the right of the steering wheel. Should just have to hook the trailer to hitch, plug it in, and you're good to go. Use +/- to control how much power goes to the trailer brakes to make slowing down smoother

Some will go that long depending on how much driving you do and the ambient conditions that the batteries encounter. The average is 5 to 7 years. I've had replacements that lasted 2 years and my dad had a car that was 15 years old when it lost its first sensor. He kept it in the garage all the time and only put 1500 to 2000 miles on it per year. He was 90 when he gave up driving and sold the car. That was just last year.

The TPMS in my '04 are original and still work fine 13 years later....

My wife has 2 originals on her 9 y/o car that are still working as well, but the other 2 failed after 6 and 7 years respectively.

To the OP: If you need one I would strongly suggest not getting it from the tire place as they will almost certainly charge you at least twice as much as you could get one for. Rather, if you know one is bad buy one and bring it with you when you get the tires mounted.

I would suggest that you check your spare tire since many people forget about that one. I'll admit that I'm not sure that the factory spare in the '12 had the sensor but it won't hurt to take a peek and make sure that it's up to full pressure anyway....

If I am not mistaken, the factory spares do not have TPMS sensors in them. The owner's manual says something about getting a TPMS error when using the spare.

The last time I put tires on my 05 Expedition, I bought sensors from Rock Auto and took them in and had the tire store put them on.
