Gents,

As I mentioned in another thread, I had to make an emergency trip up to Conn. and back on Saturday. On the way back in Delaware, while my GF was driving, a BLIS alert came up on the left side screen. It read: "BLIS fault, system disabled" or something similar. I noticed that the little little light on the drivers side mirror remained illuminated. I told her to hit the "ok" button and a few seconds later, a Cross-Traffic Fault, system disabled" or something similar...so I told her to hit the "ok" button again. After a couple of miles, the little light on the mirror was still "on" so I told her to pull into a parking lot and shut it down. We switched places and after a minute or so, I restarted the truck and all was well.

I have no idea what caused the faults since it had been dry all day nor was my truck dirty. My only guess is that possibly a bug or 5 got splattered right where the sensors are and that caused them. The Eastern Shore as it's called, has bugs like most of us have never seen. It happened right at 7:30-7:45PM when the bugs were so thick that it actually sounds like rain or small hail when you're driving at 60mph! It took me almost two hours to wash them off yesterday after I went back to my house.

I did get a chance to see 95MPH on my trip for the first and probably the last time! After reading someones comment last week and 85mph was "awesome", I just had to try it!

I left my home around 7:30 Saturday morning and as I got onto the highway 3 miles from my house, there was zero traffic. There are two red-lights a 1/4 mile apart then just 55mph highway for 12-14 miles or so. The lights were green and as I passed under the second light, I kicked it in the ass and the speedometer raced to the right. Just as it hit 95 I let up, rode a couple of hundred yards then let it roll back down to 60mph. I knew it was a "safe" section of highway because the LEO's always setup a few miles further down when they are performing traffic control. I also have an Escort 8500 x50 mounted tight to the glass between the front wipers and it's done a fantastic job for me over the past 6 years or so whether mounted in my car, my trucks or even on my bike.

Boy, 3 tons at 95mph is pretty fun....and smooth as glass too but I got it "out of my system"<LOL>!

I would rather read about you getting it out of your system rather than your OBIT for doing it.

Similar to the time I passed a state trooper at 85 MPH I waved at him and he waved back.

I have noticed my cross traffic alert will occasionally sound when I put it into reverse. Rarely, but for no reason it will sound for a few seconds. Skiddy sensors I assume. When there is snow or ice packed on the sensors, it goes crazy! I think the presence of multiple random insect impacts is the reason you got the warnings.

On my road trip in SW USA (will post soon), I did exceed 100 mph while passing a slower vehicle three times. It was not intentional, but when I glanced down at the speedo, there it was. I was impressed on how fast and smooth it could reach that speed. My wife was not impressed though....

Yes Nev, I'm hoping that all it was.....both systems have worked perfectly since Nov when I bought it but I'll post up if they do it again!

blis units are not attached to the rear quarters. if you look under truck at rear fender area you will see a gap between the skin and the sensor assembly.
"objects" can get wedged or blown into this gap.
including rain if the roads are really covered.
i guess they don't mate them flush so repairs are less costly or ease of changing sensor assembly

i would flush the gap real well and see what flops out

I get the cross traffic alert going off when I'm backing into my driveway when there is nothing in the driveway. I am not sure why it happens but it does it every once in a while. I've had a bird fly behind my truck when backing and that set it off.

My front sensors go off sometimes if I'm sitting in traffic. Even when I'm not close to the car in front of me. Kind of annoying

Check out the Bluedriver code reader. It will read all obd2 and the entire can network. It may show causes for this fault. On my 07 I cans read obd2, transmission, airbag, abs, rear load leveling, instrument cluster faults, hvac faults and I'm sure there's more

Yup, sure grabs your attention when that occurs! I'm kind of used to it now and I think that you're right about it being a reflection but sometimes, I can't figure out what it's reflecting off of...weird but not the end of the world.

I've got one of the orange multi-readers so it works in every car with the obdi2...pretty much every car built since '96. I just haven't bothered to plug it in. I figured that if it returned, I wanted the codes present for the dealer to repair under warranty.....but I'm hoping they don't come back....EVER!<LOL>

Yeah but the issue with those is that they won't read the canbus network so all you'll be able to pull is P codes maybe some U codes. That gives you engine and maybe some trans codes but thats it. The Bluedriver will read the entire car and you don't need to delete anything just browse through and the dealer could never tell you were viewing (not that it matters)

Our 15 had a rub in the harness in the rear, that caused the Fault to come up about once a week. Had a really good Dealer tech that found it. Replaced it, and the random alerts and faults went away. Still had the random front alerts sitting in traffic once in a blue moon, but the faults, and constant random alerts went away.

That Harness rub may still be in production unless they had a change in the factory installation steps. I might crawl around to see if I can see anything that might be apparent.

The reader I have seems to be able to pull the codes from the 7 or so subsystems including the B, C & U in addition to the P's and maybe some others (?) on my mercedes SLK and it's a canbus system. It was pretty cutting edge stuff back in 2002. I don't know why I would ever need to know some of the info available but a tech might.

I was warned by a friend whose shop works on European cars not to ever try to tap into the electrical system to add anything before calling him first.

I know a couple years ago when BMW added canbus to some of their bikes, because locally people know that I build bikes....I began getting calls from guys who had tried to add lighting and fragged the system. I admit to not knowing much at all about canbus but apparently, they detect increased resistance/voltage and will block off or shut down varying systems sending the entire system into a failsafe or "limp mode". That about sums up my knowledge of them<LOL>!

I have never had the BLIS or Cross Traffic Alert before my new Expy. Despite its few quirks, it has worked very well for me. There have been many times I have backed out of a parking spot and it sounds to alert of moving vehicles. The BLIS is great in seeing the orange dot in the side mirrors and then sure enough, seeing a vehicle beside me. I cannot learn to depend on these aids, but they sure are helpful!! It is a sign of the future where common sense is being replaced by automation, so gotta keep the common sense!!

Copy that! I still turn my head to visually check. I've to keep the old neck moving and like Reagan said, trust but verify. :D
