I was talking with the mechanic at my work and he said that he used to use a battery powered impact to remove the spark plugs from the 5.4L Expeditions that he used to service. He said that the torque and rotation of the impact allowed for the plugs to come out without breaking or stripping. Anybody else done or seen this work?

Fill me in, is there a problem with spark plug removal? Is it common for the spark plugs to become seized into the heads?
Personally, my only problem is reaching the darn things. Once I'm able to get a socket on them, I'm able to turn them right out with a 3/8" drive ratchet.

Not for you, you have a 2v motor it isn't hard to take yours off it's hard to keep them in lol use a torque wrench and be sure to torque to spec once all said and done

No one has said it but it’s a must to have a warm motor not hot or cold. 2 rules of thoughts back out till right then tighten back out working plug out. Use a impact gun 1 quick hard hit no chance to stick. Or easy one go to Parts house rent the otc spark plug tool get out before breaks. 2v just unscrew when putting back in use torque wrench to prevent striping the head.

Most of the 5.4L years do NOT have a spark plug removal problem, maybe he's unaware of that?

No way in hell would I use an impact there unless already backed into a corner, and I loooove impacts

I wish members would get their information CORRECT prior to them posting

You say 2004 and after SUCKS
If that is true then why does the 2004 expedition use the same plugs as the 2003?
They both have the 2v engine

I believe that some late 04's did have the 3V motor, which had the 2 piece plugs.

I think it's kind of funny..... 1997-2004 plugs were blowing right out of the top of the motor, couldn't keep them in! So naturally they have to redesign it so the things won't come out again, under any circumstance ever....... like when you want to change them...:dogpile:
