Well that sucks. What’s the point of having the text feature on the radio if it doesn’t work. Could there be a hack of some sort?

just a Chinese off brand

shouldn't be texting and driving anyway so doesn't really matter to me but that's what I was told by the manufacturer when I asked about it. It will work if you mirror the phone but that's not using the Bluetooth connection

True. Some of those Chinese off brands are the best looking because they look stock. The pioneer one I looked at you can totally tell is aftermarket.

then I stumbled across these Android head units figured I would give one a try

It works fine on my 17. When a text message comes in on the screen you have the option to see it or hear. It if you click hear it it reads the message. If you press and hold the voice button, Siri will let you send a voice text, you just have to tell her "period" at the end of the sentence or "question mark" etc. for proper punctuation. It works great, I really have not problems and I'm using an iPhone 6 plus so it's several generations behind.

Andy, I have an iPhone 5. There must be a setup for receiving text messages since mine don't show up when connected with BT. I have heard you have to connect via the download cord and set it up, correct? This would be convenient since I travel long distance and miss some important messages during the travel time. Thanks.

For me I get zero notifications even with the notifications on the phone being set to receive. So I have no idea what to do

Mine connects through Bluetooth. You might have to do something in the setup. If I remember correctly you have to check a box that allows the system to access the phone when it is locked. Once you do it it will access the text messages and put them on the screen with a tone announcing the message. There may be other settings on both the phone and the entertainment system that you have to check. I did it back in February so I was in all the menus but I don't remember all the steps now.

Thanks for that Andy. I remember reading there is an extra step and decided not to dig into it too much when I set mine up earlier this year. When I get some time, I will again check it out. My 2012 F-150 FX4 had it automatically set up with Sync1. But that was 5 years ago... Sync3 just had to make it more difficult!! Go figure.

I think so Muddy, I have the Sync3 if you have a 15 I think you have Sync or Sync2 (I'm not sure what it's called. My son has that version in his 14 Flex and and my daughter has it in her 16 Fusion, their systems, both read texts from their phones. James has an Android phone and Kasey has an iPhone. So I'm thinking you should be able to do it too.

Ive had no issues with the Sync3 on my 2016 or the gen 2 system on my 2016 explorer.
You have to enable it on your Iphone and the Sync system.

The gen 1 sync on my 2012 F150 it does not work on any iphone. I know there are options for it in the menu, just is will not work.

Ford didn't enable the origianal "older" sync systems to comm with text b/c you can text through siri. They changed it in the new models.

I updated to the 2.3 Software Version yesterday for the Sync 3 I haven't had the chance to play with it to see if I see any changes yet. Maybe tomorrow.
