My truck has always had awkward drivetrain characteristics. When cold it shifts a little differently, then again so do the brand new trucks. I’ve always had the 2-1 “bump” and occasional light clunks from 3-2 and 2-1 that come and go. Also gets light clunk at times if I come off gas at low speed and get back into it lightly (parking lot speeds). Almost feels like something is loose or disengages and re engages. All these “issues” I have are very well documented in Expeditions and F-150s and many never saw any solutions. Some said slip yolks, programming etc but no one came to a consensus. Many mechanics and people think it’s the end of the world and the trans is shot.......but if it’s been doing it for 160,000+ miles is it really an issue or just an annoyance? All this being said my trans shifts smoothly and works well, never misses a beat.

My most recent symptom that is actually “new” is a clunk when I shift from park to reverse.

My point is.....don’t let people scare you into parting with your money over nothing.

the reason I am "going slow" is the money factor. I am old, fat, bald and retired and not able to support dealerships, needlessly.

I know about quirks in this Expedition. When I first got it I went crazy over the "soft" break pedal during a panic stop move. I went to dealership because the break pedal could be pumped up like there was air in the line, or something. I ended up driving most of the new Expeditions on the lot and they all had a soft pedal during panic stops. It is frustrating and I try to never need a panic stop. I live with it.

With motor running temp we drove about 60 miles and no problems. Good solid pedal and acceleration. Did let motor set over night. Same problem when cold next morning.

Next time you feel the miss, hold the throttle in the current position. Let it miss like crazy and give the ecm time to determine the fault and log a code or codes.

You need either a real diagnosis or you need to throw parts at this thing.

Other than Stamp's excellent suggestion, which uses the truck's own diagnostic capabilities, there's no way to find a coil that's breaking down or a deteriorated spark plug without recording performance with a computer.

I use mode 6 on my Bluedriver scanner to find a mis. It will show every mis whether it sets a light or not.

But for someone without a scanner your way is the easiest

I will have to return to dealership to get computer hooked to it. Will dog it to get possible codes. So far I have been afraid to hold it very long. More than about fifteen seconds and I back out.

So, I did send vehicle to a transmission shop. They say a clogged fuel filter. Not sure how the filter caused the slow engage from Park to Drive, but that is what they said "fixed it". Will have to pick it up tomorrow and check to see if it really is "fixed".

I remember when I brought my truck to my shop when I had a misfire I thought for sure it was trans. Me and owner talked it over and he thought so to.....said metal shavings were likely plugging everything up. When they dug into it they found it was merely a coil causing a misfire that made everything act up. It seemed like a trans issue as it wouldn’t stay in overdrive and shifted like crap. One coil and plug later and it was fixed up and out the door. Changed trans fluid and filter anyway after and it was clean with no shavings. It was a whole fiasco on here I posted flipping out and thought I was going to have to get rid of the vehicle or rebuild trans.....even started looking around. I was kind of making a fool out of myself. Talk about putting the cart before the horse. Then I got the phone call “you’d never guess”......yea.......and the worst part is.....I CAUSED IT WITH THE HOSE....lol.

A clogged fuel filter will make your engine run poorly which will in turn effect transmission operation. Any time your engine runs poorly in fact.

It is all my own fault, I guess. I have 57,000 miles on the car and never checked I was getting what I paid for. I did pay for filters during oil changes but never checked it was done. The low miles on this thing is what had me so skeptical about bad tranny. I could understand some related component like seal or something but not a complete clutch pack.

I am crossing fingers this did stop the cold start gear hesitation and sputtering like motor has a governor on it. I guess starving for gas would make anything run crappy.
