My wife and I have a 60lb lab and two car seats (both <2, so no boosters for a while). We are debating the bench or captain's chairs in either the '18 or '19. The dog rides well in the car, and when we had one seat, he was great on the bench. That's no longer an option in our Outback as he wouldn't really fit

Whenever we travel the trunk gets filled up pretty quick with all the stuff that comes with kids, so there's not much space there for the dog there either. Wondered if anyone had experience with a medium or large dog in between chairs in the second row with the 4th Gen.

Thanks!

I have 5 dogs...all around 50lbs. The space between the 2nd-row captains is perfect for your boy, assuming he isn't a chub-tub. At 60lbs and being a lab...he doesn't sound like a tubbo. I assume you'll want the third row folded for all the stuff.

Edit: you can also fold the third row 60/40, if your stuff will fit in one of those spaces, and he can have the other seat(s).

60lb lab w/ 2 regular car seats on captain chairs. Dog does great between the seats when rear bench is folded down. Plenty of room for her to lay down and even turn around. With the 2 captains chairs slid back as far as they go, she can even lay and turn around in front of capt. chairs. We have a blanket folded between the seats on the floor for her to lay on. She loves it.

I’d highly suggest checking out something like the SleepyPod ClickIt harness device. Not only will it help protect the pup, more importantly it will protect the kiddos and parents. An unsecured 60-lb dog can become a deadly projectile in a crash putting all other passengers at risk.

All you need is an open seat belt for the SleepyPod harness. I’d definitely go for the 2nd row bench over the captain’s chairs if there’s a chance you’ll have the dog, both kids, and 3rd row folded for cargo.

My 130 lb Bernese Mountain Dog sits between our captains just fine. However, the drooling bastard belongs in the way back!
