One of my good friends is still in the business of car audio. He wants me to try out Memphis Audio. He says it a great product for the money. What’s your thoughts on it? I have been out of the circle so long I don’t know what’s good anymore. MB Quart use to be my favorite but all the new stuff seems so cheap.

It’s decent equipment but still considered an evonomy/budget priced line. If you’re looking for significant sound quality, it wouldn’t be where I would start.

It’s a shame. The Sony system in my 17 Explorer and 18 edge rivals any aftermarket system I’ve ever put together.

The problem with ALL car stereo is the location. It is very hard to produce good sound in this confined space. Its much easier in a "good" listening room. The acoustic of any stereo (or orchestra) depends HIGHLY on the room. Why all these efforts to create great concert venues (Vienna Musikverein, Sydney opera etc). So the electronics can only do so much.....a $2000 system in a great room can sound better than a $50k system in a (very) bad room....

Point is again, that for cars its difficult to get a great result...on the other hand we spend a lot of time there and try to optimize, I totally understand.....but its (almost) a lost fight and a game of diminishing returns....

The sony system in the 2nd gen edge was phenomenal. Its weird that that same system that spunded so good in the edge and explorer spunded horrible in the 3rd gen expy. The b&o sounds better if not more powerful.

The Sony system is awful in the F-150 too, whether it’s a 12th or 13th gen truck.

Replying to the original post, I actually like the Bose in Yukon XL I recently rented much more. The bass is coming from all around, and the sound is just crisper. The B&O system in my Expedition leaves much to be desired. Just my 2 cents.

I have a tahoe rental with bose myself. I wont say the sound is crisper but the bass is way more pronounces to the point of drowning all other sounds. I do like that the bose unit seems to have higher clarity within all the sound ranges where as the b&o blends the sounds together a bit. The bose unit is slightly superior though

It's amazing how good it is in one vehicle and bad in another. Shows that lack of investment either on Ford's or Sony's part to properly place equipment and equalize the system.

Interesting point.

Makes you wonder if a good audio shop can do an optimization on a car system like av places can do for higher end TVs.

Unfortunately, there is no adjustment for any OEM system (aside from the standard adjustments built in: bass, treble, etc) without adding additional components. It’s a slippery slope. You add one piece to improve the sound. Then, it sounds so much better if you just do this second piece. Then, the other stuff just isn’t cutting it now that you’ve got better sound, so...

You get the point.

I lied, the bose unit is not better. The ford unit has a better fuller sound. The bose has more bass and a tad more dynamic but sound has a more tinny quality to it.

Does anybody know what the base stereo is in the 6 speaker set up? I'm imagining from how it sounds that it doesn't have an extra sub or amp anywhere? Where do the sub and amp reside on the B&O system in the Limited and above?

I'm a big audiophile. Never been a fan of bose. Of any type. B&O should be superior. I just hope the 2020 B&O is at least as good as the Sony system in my 2017 Explorer. That's the best system I've ever heard in a car, and it's OEM. Shocking really.

The Sony system in the expy was inferior to the sony system in the edge by a large margin and I never understood why. That said, the b&o is def a great system for a mainstream brand.

Satellite radio has the worst quality, besides standard FM. I'd rather listen to HD Radio adverts and DJ's than uninterrupted SAT radio.

Best is using the direct connection USB with a high end streaming service like Spotify or Amazon music. The music sounds decent out of the BO system, but i hate that the system starts to become non-linear when you pass 50-60% volume. It kinda increases volume, but you can hear it's capping peaks in volume, where you don't get a clear sound at all.

Anything over 17, the sound gets a bit muddy, however the system is so powerful, you don't need to get that loud. 10 is good volume, 15 is a bit too loud. 13 was the sweet spot for us when we had it, Great volume, fantastic sound quality and clarity.

B&O is Harman. So is Revel. AKG in Cadillac too. Harman Kardon in Chryslers. Mark Levinson in Toyota. JBL is also Harman. They own a lot of brands.

I wish I splurged for the package with the B&O. The standard audio in my 2020 is terrible. There are mid but no rear speakers with the standard.

Sirius is highly compressed, so you won't get the best out of the system.

p.s. I'm satisfied with Sirius for the $5/mth we have been paying for the last decade. The handful of times they have failed to offer it when we called, we just canceled and received the same $5 offer a week later. :p
