Rattle at start up and noise in general forced me to do the timing chain.
The passenger side chain had no tension, but the seal was just fine which I found odd. It was leaking somewhere but not at the seal. Driver side was blown but held tension. There was a little damage to the back of the crank wheel from the chain.
I did the Melling timing set 3-391SCC with the cast iron ratcheting tensioners and Melling M360HV.
The Melling tensioners are very nice pieces, and have a little port that sprays oil right on the chain which I thought was a nice touch. The Ford chain and sprocket look and feel MUCH nicer than the Melling stuff though.
Not a hard job, just time consuming.
Tools that made the job way easier.
Air hammer, put a wrench you don't care for on the fan clutch and hit it with the air hammer.
1/4" air ratchet.
Mountain RM6 ratcheting wrenches.
Nice powerful Impact drive for that crank bolt!
Irwin vice grips to rotate the cams because I'm cheap. No special cam tools needed!
Mistakes I made were. . .
I didn't have the valve cover gaskets. (I clearly wasn't thinking).
I needed a small 3 jaw puller to remove the balancer. (I had the screw type)
Removed the PS pump pulley, but didn't have the correct installer. . .
Working on the truck outside in the desert with LOTS of wind. . . .
Here are some pics!
