2014EL. driving interstate. Outside Temp 59. Auto climate control set to 72. Every time I stop , water condensate is dripping on ground under engine.

Why is this? Is the a/c running? Don't know why that would be with 59 outside Temp? Would I get better gas mileage if I turned auto off? Seems like only heat required so why a/c?

Not a big deal just curious.

The AC compressor will cycle on and off when you're in Auto. Its function is to dehumidify the cabin....even when its cold outside. You can turn the compressor off by pushing the "AC" button (indicator light OFF) if you want. You'll notice the difference in the cabin atmosphere pretty quick.

If you have climate controls set to blow on the windshield and the temperature outside is above the freezing point (14F or more, actually), it will cycle the A/C to "dehumidify" the windshield quicker and keep it condensation-free.

A work around it to set climate controls to blow air directly at you or at your feet. This should bypass the de-humidifying feature. My old 99 Explorer had this too, most manufacturers have implemented this de-humidifying feature since the late 1990's from what I've heard. All cars with A/C have it set up this way, as far as I know.

Also, are you sure it's the A/C condensation dripping? My slow water-like drip under the truck turned out to be a weeping water pump... it got progressively worse until it became evident a new water pump was necessary asap (the weep became a trickle).

Yeah I tasted it. Odd but true

Thanks for the dehumidification feedback.

I accidentally injested some gasoline before, makes your whole mouth numb like a localized pain killer along with a day or two of gas breath. Now that’s manly.

How much did you ingest, lol?

I always thought the stuff they put in there nowadays (cleaners, additives, etc) are pure poison... and medical attention would be needed for sure if it actually made it down your throat and into your gut.

Maybe 1/4 to 1/2 cup or so? Never got super sick. Did get nasty gasoline burps, probably took a few years off lol.

Well, if you didn't get organ damage / poisoning and it just went away after a few days, then you'll more than likely be ok, with no loss in years remaining.

Regardless, we're all gonna go extinct in 12 years anyway due to driving such "hugely polluting behemoths" instead of $100k Teslas, so no worries!

:D

Drinking gas in the old days was just part of life if you "did crap with engines"...doesn't matter if you fix'em, race 'em, boat 'em, mow 'em....nothing like snoot full of 105 High test....will have you spitting for an hour.

No JE, we weren't actually swallowing the stuff when we started a syphon, most of us spit it out! Why did you drink it? Over and over again??<LOL>

Yeah, I'm tending to agree with 762.....with the crap in gas today....no telling what would happen....prob get the "dying roach shakes"! Yikes! It smells like the poorly refined gas I bought in Mexico.....in 1985...........

We'd get gas breath when the "chosen one" had to start the syphon process when we'd steal gas out of my Dad's car to put it in the boat to go skiing...

That sounds very familiar. Although we did the neighbors cars. Hey, marine gas is expensive. The shit I did when I was a youngin.

After my last experience with that I bought the siphon pump. I have 3 of them now. Will NEVER get gas in the mouth again!

I once got DOT3 brake fluid in my mouth and throat when I was trying to siphon out old fluid from the reservoir. I was much younger and just starting to work on my own cars - often with no proper tools, so I had to "improvise" a lot...the hose wasn't clear and the fluid thicker than water, so I really had to "suck hard" on it. By the time I felt it in my throat, it was too late!

Man, the taste of it immediately provoked a gag reflex... it was THE most bitter thing I have ever tasted. Gargling water immediately did help, but not much. I could feel it for days afterwards, plus it burned my throat. What a horrible experience, lol... I can clearly remember the taste to this day.

Today I have all kinds of fluid suction pumps in my garage and will never have to do that again, unless it's some sort of an emergency and I'm stranded with no proper tools... all the fluids in a modern car are concentrated death if ingested in any quantity, so fk that lol....

I have also had an experience with transmission fluid though I didn’t ingest it like the gasoline. That crap tastes like nothing else ever and no matter how much you brush and mouthwash all you taste is transmission fluid LOL.

Wow you were lucky. Back in 1984 when I worked at a Ford dealership wrenching, my one coworker buddy was smoking over a battery that was on the hot charger.....(200amp). Well the battery exploded and sounded like a bomb going off!
It startled me so bad that I banged my head on the hood of the car I was working on and I was several stalls away. We had and older mechanic that was a volunteer firefighter on weekends that grabbed him and helped him up the stairs to our bathroom/locker room and washed his eyes out the best he could and then called the paramedics. We didn’t have an eye wash station back then. He returned to work several days later when they removed his eye patches. He said they had to pop his eyes out on his cheeks too wash them thoroughly and he passed out when they hit his cheeks looking different directions. I always am careful now when I’m working around a Sulfating battery not to cause any sparks because they are no joke when they explode!

Holy Cow. I have a few other stories about how stupid I have been but they now seem tame.

This is why I totally respect my elders for their knowledge (life experience). The longer you live the more you learn what works or doesn't.

If we had no car to steal gas from, we'd take my parents' 60's Rollfast tandem bicycle with the 5 gallon steel boat gas can. The guy in the back carried the can, the front "man" peddled and steered. It was 2+ mile round trip to the gas station ($.28/Gal). We probably would have made the national news if we ever tipped over with a full load. We didn't...
