Cold Start Rattle

Sounds like the pap pap pap of a small exhaust leak.

The linkage for the wastegate actuators on the turbos. Very common in these and considered “normal”. If you stick your hand in there and hold them they will be silent. It’s very annoying. Once the metal warms up they are silent.

So is it air leaking around the waste wastegate seal or a wastegate just wiggling sideways back and forth?

It’s the linkage itself rattling. Nothing is leaking just not a good design for the linkage. Too much play and causes noise. Here is a screenshot from a quick google search.

Got it. Thanks. The only turbos I have any real experience with are Garrett's from Buick Grand Nationals.
