What is this?

Known issue: I have this and took it in and it was the cam phase shifter. This could develop into something bad after some time. They are fixing mine on Monday. 2-3 full days labor (Platinum warranty) get a loaner too. Thank God for that extra warranty

SSM 48272 - 2017-2018 F-150, 2018-2019 Expedition/Navigator - 3.5L EcoBoost - Ticking/Tapping Or Rattle Type Noise On Start Up After A Cold Soak

Some 2017-2018 F-150s built on or before 10-Jul-2018 and 2018-2019 Expedition and Navigator built on or before 8-Apr-2019 with 3.5L EcoBoost may exhibit tick, tap, or rattle type noises from top of engine front cover for 2-5 seconds after a cold start. A TSB is expected to be published late 4th quarter 2019. In the interim, replace all 4 VCT units and update the PCM calibration. Do not replace other cam drive related components unless inspection identifies a concern. Refer to the Workshop Manual (WSM), Section 303-01. Claim labor replace VCTs using published labor operations and PCM programming using M-time. Part availability is currently limited. Dealers should order parts only when required to complete a repair. Once the parts are ordered, the vehicle may be returned to the customer to drive. This condition does not affect long term durability or performance.

Thanks for this info, I’m going to save this comment and hope I never have to have this conversation with my service tech.

Seems like there are multiple possible culprits. It’s not a loose heat shield, I checked that.

I’ll schedule some time at the dealer, truck has <10k miles.

Just took mine in for a diagnostic day. Of my laundry list of things for them to look at, this was one of the major items.

I was prepared with the TSB information provided above (THANK YOU!), and I also had video on my phone of a cold start so they could hear my engine do it’s best Duramax diesel impersonation.

They didn’t even hesitate. Scheduled her for open heart surgery and ordered new cam phase shifters and associated wear items that may have been affected. When the parts come in they will need her for 4 days.

Thanks guys for the information.

FORD has an UPDATED fix coming for this. Might be worth waiting on the updated parts instead of the same faulty parts going in again to fail.....

How long are they saying the parts are going to take to arrive? I’ve heard ‘backordered for weeks’ from other owners.

The last update was that Ford will release the updated parts in the 4th quarter. Well, they only have a few weeks left if they are holding to their timeline.

They told the dealers NOT to fix these with replacement parts until these new updated parts are available, there is a bulletin out on this. Its been posted on this forum.

Update on my 2018:
Dropped her off today for the cam phaser TSB.
My Ford dealer has one man that is their engine specialist and he does all the cam phaser jobs.
I asked to meet him and tour his working area.

Jake definitely put me at ease. He seemed very meticulous and organized. He’s done dozens of these cam phaser jobs. I had him show me the parts and verified they are a different part number than the early 2018 build numbers. He seemed confident these were improved versions of the OEM part.

I guess we’ll see.

he also showed me the pile of new seals, gaskets, o-rings and bolts. He said he replaces everything that he touches—even adds some things not on the list, like the front main seal and the serpentine belt. Why not, if you gotta take all that stuff off anyway?
The only thing I had to ask for was a new water pump.
