I have a 2007 expedition and the motor is bad in it. A friend of mine dad died in a wreck his 2003 expedition so the family has just had the SUV in a garage. The engine only has about 63,000 miles on it. He says I can have it for 1200 dollars. Will this engine fit in my 2007 expedition.

What is bad about your motor? The 5.4L is relatively easy to do a basic rebuild/refresh on when it's out.

Plus the short block on the 3-Valve 5.4 is insanely stout compared to the 4.6 for example, and the 4.6 were used and abused themselves in livery. The short block rarely gives issue on these trucks.....forged pistons, crack-powdered rods, forged crank, cross bolted mains all wrapped in a deep skirt block. It’s not an old small block Chevy. Generally either compression loss at high mileage or a head mishap are the more common failures (or if one lets a roller follower go and a valve meets a piston). Anything can happen though.

Thanks for the replies. I was trying to figure out how to reply to each of your responses separately but I'm lost. The engine in my expy now is a rebuilt one an engine shop put innit about 2 years ago. It only has about 13,000 miles on it. At about 11,000 miles it started misfiring on plug number 8. I bought new coils and plugs to change them and when I pulled out the number 8 plug it was bent. Like the piston slapped it. At first I let it set up about 2 months then when I decided to crank it, it smoked badly and smoked everytime I start it up. Now its losing power and the rpm drop really bad when I come to a stop and sometimes cuts off.
The first engine I took out was in much better condition than the new one is in now. It would only smoke a little when it crunk up but no loss of power or anything. I just got a new cause I figured the old one was about to get worse. Seems when I let them sit up the seals go bad. I have an 81 monte carlo that I love so I drive it more than anything.

If I were in your shoes I’d check the junkyards and LKQ/KeyStone (more reliable mileage reporting with LKQ as it’s insurance total outs) for low mileage used engines.

Thanks for making my wife right, lol. She just told me to do this 2 days ago. I'm gonna have to tell her an expert told me the same thing she did. Lol

What was the length and miles for the warranty? Surely it's still covered after only 13 months?

If you go that route I’d recommend LKQ/Keystone used out of a total loss over a junkyard. They offer a return period if you get a dud by chance, and as I mentioned the mileage is more reliably reported. You never know when you deal with a junkyard, and some lie. If you know a good one that’s all good, but if you don’t it may be safer to deal with a large company like them.

The '03 is a way better engine than the '07....I would make the swap. 3 valve 5.4 suck was glad to get rid of mine.

2003 engine is not compatible the 2V is a throttle cable and no VCT. The 3V is throttle by wire and VCT. ECM will not match up to engine and you’ll have no throttle input. The 2V was pretty reliable but won’t work. Not like the newer ones are better either. It seems every 3.5 Ecoboost needs timing chain and phasers at or before 100k as they start to rattle like a can of bolts due to the cheap single chain design that stretches, F-150 forum. It’s always hit or miss, just fix it and maintain is all we can do.

I had an '03 F150 with the 4.7 or whatever size it was. Bought it used in 2010 with 120,000 miles on it. Drove it 4 years including a trip from Texas to Colorado. Sold it in 2014. Buyer still has it. It has 260,000 miles on it now and still runs good. It's his daily driver. The seats are all worn out, but it still keeps on purring. I still had it when I bought my Expedition and it seemed to have a little more pep than the Expy with the 5.4.
