Nuke,
Make sure they change the oil b4 you pickup the truck.

My dealer did not change the oil after the cam phasers.

And they should have.

Set back #1! I rolled in this morning, they took the truck back and the Service Advisor came out because the Lead Tech told him he was on vacation this afternoon and not back until Monday. Lead Tech said he didn't want to get started and then go away for most of a week. Service Advisor was apologetic and we decided to give it another go on Tuesday to give the Lead Tech a couple full days. While I'm not thrilled with the mix-up, I appreciate them telling me and letting me take the truck back until then.

As far as oil goes, the service team has been really good. I actually had the truck in for an oil change when they diagnosed the issue. The Service Advisor comped the oil change because he said it was going to need to be done again with the TSB work.

I know this is probably not the same problem mine had but my whole rattle, from the lift gate area, was from the tag rattling on the rear. Tag was a little warped looking so it didn't sit flush. I put a little duct tape on the bottom of the tag and it stopped the rattle. After this fixed the problem I requested a new tag.

Hey "TheNuke". Just trying to look out for you here. I went back and looked at my documentation and this is the exact same TSB done to my rig, and I see on the TSB where it says 10.5 hours for either the expy or the Lincoln, but if I were you, I would plan on 2-4 days. Per the dealer, one of the main reasons this takes so long is because when they pull the front off, there isn't a gasket that seals it. It's a liquid gasket or RTV style sealant. Supposedly, stripping the old one off cleanly can take half a day by itself, and then the new one has completely cure before it's filled again.

Try your best to get a loaner if you can (if you need one). But this begs another question, do you know if the tech doing the work has done one of these before? I talked directly to the heavy line tech that did mine (and he has at least 15 in queue to do) so I know he's unfortunately experienced in these.

Anyway, just wanted to level set, maybe others have had theirs back in 1.5 days but I doubt it. Mine wouldn't even test drive it till the day after they sealed it back up (and there was still freaking oil all over the place).

Also, did your dealer have parts in stock? Mine took roughly 7 weeks to get all parts in, even with an expedite.

I really appreciate the heads up! The tech doing the work has done this before. When I asked he said, "I've done enough." Not the chattiest guy I've met. Parts didn't seem to be an issue. I'm naturally skeptical when it comes to vehicle servicing, but I'm trying to chill out.

I brought it in this morning and they pulled it right into the service area. Fingers crossed that they take long enough but not too long...

Sounds like you’re a lucky one. I’m going on 8 days now for the VCt fix along with fixing a creaking sunshade. They were hoping the done today or tomorrow but as of late yesterday STILL waiting for a part, after 7 days...

We'll see if I'm "lucky" or the dealership doesn't know what it's doing. I'm really hoping it is luck, but based on everything I read, I'm surprised by the time they think it will take AND availability of parts. It seems so normal it's suspicious. Ha!

In all fairness I called the day before and they then lost my appointment so I pretty much dropped the car off without them even knowing it was coming so very well might have taken an extra couple of days because of that.

Yeah, I don't know if I'm more surprised about they time or the parts. My parts were on back order for about 6-7 weeks. And it was a nationwide backorder.

Brutal.

Well if it makes you feel better I got the car back and although it wasn’t quite a completely cold start up, I still heard rattling so the VCT repair did nothing at all.

I don’t really have the patience to send it back for a week so I’m going to tell them they didn’t fix it and go back in the near future and demand the car back after they order parts as 9 days for the VCT was ridiculous.

I’m guessing if it’s the wastegate or whatever it’s not detrimental to the engine?

Ford claims it doesn't cause any issues, but the rattling sound is clearly two or more metal parts flapping against each other, which any one mechanically inclined will tell you over time it will wear. But maybe Ford thinks it will last long enough for most warranties to expire, and then it will become an issue.

My problem is the shear principal of it. When I drop my kids off at school and pull away in a vehicle this new and expensive, I don't want the school principal hearing the sound and acting like something is wrong with my car. My feeling is this, unless I modify something, like an exhaust, I expect my cars to look and sound, well, you know, like their price. I know, a lot to ask.

I haven't heard back from my dealer yet about the techline inquiry. So I'll end up calling them back today or tomorrow. But also, 9 days, my god. I sure hope you had a loaner or something, or maybe you don't need one but that's BRUTAL.

Hey all, I told my dealer they didn’t fix the rattle with the VCT fix and he told me via text Ford says that rattle is normal for the wastegate!

Anyway to help here or is there any TSB for a potential fix for the expedition? I dont want to have to run around to other dealers yet.

Luckily I haven’t turned in my Acura MDX lease yet so the 9 days wasn’t too terrible.

I just texted my service tech at the dealer saying I have a 125k bumper to bumper and lifetime powertrain so it’s Fords problem if things really get bad. He said some dealers might fix the turbo rattle under warranty but when they turn in the claim Ford could very well deny it and they’re footing the bill. So apparently I’m not getting the rattle fixed any time soon, at least from that dealer.

Well, here's the update. I got an email stating the tech completed the TSB-related work an hour or so ago - it took all day Tuesday and another 6 hours today with a dedicated tech. He started it back up and the second rattle isn't gone so they've ordered a driver's side turbo and parts for the replacement. They're keeping the vehicle until Tuesday when they expect they'll have the parts in and work completed.

I'm sorry to hear that others are having a rough go at their dealerships and thankful for the way things are going over here. I'll keep you posted if I learn more about how one turbo rattle gets covered whereas another doesn't. It seems ridiculous that a turbo with a flapping wastegate and actuator is "normal" at 40k, so it seems like my dealership is doing it right.

As MCB345 stated, the dealer may not get reimbursed for the repair. But I sure hope it fixes your issue. I certainly wont take no lightly, I'll say that.

Yes, very jealous! Please share any input as to how they’re going about getting reimbursed (maybe ask them after they’re done?). I’d really like to know what to tell my local dealer as they have been very kind but won’t push the boundaries or take any risks apparently.
