Hi Everyone,

I recently picked up a new (to me) 2019 Expedition in Silver Spruce with the Stealth and Rear Entertainment package. We're coming out of an Infiniti QX56 and this is my first domestic in a long time. While we're not off to a great start, I knew this was a real possibility, as I do my homework before buying a vehicle and had run across this forum and several videos about cam phaser issues. Unfortunately I also have the wastegate rattle, but the dealership wants to tackle TSB 20-2315 first and then go after the rattle. They've basically said they hope the rattle goes away, but they're not holding their breath.

While the dealer waits for the parts, the truck goes in on Friday for C-pillar wrap in gloss black, and ceramic tint on the two front windows. I also picked up the folding cargo mats for the rear storage area.

I've read the threads and watched the videos, but just thought I'd say hello and ask for any tips on ensuring the work is done properly. Thanks!

I'm not sure where you live but I live in Florida and I put 3M Ceramic IR on my 2019 Expedition Max. I had them put 35% on the front windows which supposedly keeps it legal.
If I did it over again I would have used the 25%.

tell me more about these folding cargo mats please!
Sure. This thread here has more info, but these are made specifically for the Expedition and will protect the seat backs as you load and unload cargo. For whatever reason the pictures of them don't match what they actually look like...

Thanks for the heads up. I actually live in WI, so heat rejection is not as important as it is in Southern states. The tint shop owner actually talked me out of (spending more on) ceramic. He basically said that if I only do the front two windows the heat rejection will have an impact, but not much. He said for it to really work well you'd want to augment the factory tint with a really light layer of ceramic and even put something very light on the windshield.

He used his light meter and found that the factory tint was letting about 18% of light pass through and we ended up using 25% on the front two windows to keep it a touch lighter than factory. I ended up doing the C-pillars, along with the emblems in gloss black. You can still make out the embossing through the vinyl, which is kind of a neat look, but may be hard to make out in the pics.View media item 7258

Sounds like you're experiencing exactly what I am. Took mine in for the wastegate rattles (very obvious, had recordings, leveraged stethoscope, etc) and was told the same thing, that Ford is telling them to do the phases TSB first. Waited 6wks for parts, took it in, and they had it for four days. While I like the dealer, and feel like they are trying, I wasn't impressed. Literally, within 60 seconds of getting in the vehicle, starting it, I heard the same exact rattle. I've since had several conversations with the dealer and the managers, and here we go again.

Frustratingly, these people act as though bringing the vehicle back for more service is no big deal. I only have two vehicles, and I have to shuttle kids back and forth from school everyday. So being without an $80K+ MSRP that I specifically bought for the size is really annoying. Not to mention, the dealer is a ways away, and when they had mine for four days, they didn't have loaners and gave me an Enterprise rental. That stupid ass rental was a Ford Ecosport. My 6 yr old couldn't even fit in the back seat, let alone car seats and boosters. Was super pissed.

Coming from an Infinity like you did, I don't think you'll like the service outcomes. Every Infinity dealer I've worked with had really nice loaners and service centers. Not Ford. To me, if Ford will compete with the luxury brands ever, they need to step up their service quality.

So like you, I have the rattle still. And I get to go back again. Not to mention, they didn't even repair two other things that were on the ticket (they forgot to hand off parts to the other techs).

Sucks, I love the rig, but I'm already getting pretty nervous.

While I agree that this scenario sucks. All manufacturers have issues. We also had a 2012 QX56 and while the vehicle overall was decent, it of course (like all Nissans) had electrical gremlins. One winter in very cold temps, the vehicle would not start. We called Infiniti roadside and they sent a jumper vehicle and tried for about 30 mins to get it started and it wouldn't at all. We had to get it towed on a flatbed 4 hrs from where we lived (no Infiniti dealers closer). So now we are stuck with no rig and no loaner (since you always get a loaner when at the dealer). After the repair (which was diagnosed as a bad battery - so 2 roadside repairs and a towing!) Then Infiniti refused to provide vehicle reunite services. I called Corporate and complained and got literally no where. They said too bad you will have to come get it 4 hrs away with no loaner! That was the beginning of the end with my relationship with Infiniti.

Sounds just like my recent post. CPO 2019 Special Edition, took possession and and within 10 days (today) I have it over at the dealer to fix the same rattle. We'll see what they end up fixing, they know the issue very well it seems but unsure of what their plan of attack will be. I guess I'll find out soon enough though!

I imagine there are many many people out there living with the rattle or that don't even notice it since all of these slightly used Expeditions are going straight in to the shop!

I hear ya, in my area there is a very high density of luxury dealers and they seem to have dozens of available loaners. Again, to me, now that these are in the same price range as those, at some point we should be able to expect similar service.

And yes, I also agree that all vehicles have issues, these issues just seem to be so widespread.

Honestly if you want luxury manufacturer like service you’ll need to go to a luxury brand. Part of the premium price. Maybe you’ll have better luck with a Lincoln.

Got to remember at Ford they have people buying $20K shoe boxes all the way up to sub $90K SUVs. They aren’t going to save loaner cars off to the sides for the people bringing in certain vehicles.

On a side note we too had an Infiniti. A M45x Premium. Loved the car right up until the moment the transmission went out and it wasn’t worth fixing it. Bought it CPO 3 years old. It was only 9 years old with 142K on it when it went kaput. We had great service for the most part. When we lived in Chicago the service was phenomenal. Moving back to West Michigan the Infiniti dealer was a bit mediocre. They damaged our dash when doing an air bag recall. They ended up replacing the whole thing but it took months.

In the end no brand or dealer will be perfect...

These are premium price bands. I wouldn't expect Ford to give the same service for a fiesta as their top of the line. Anyone in any service centric role understands you can have variable offerings. And sorry, I won't pay the Lincoln price just for the service if the underlying issues may still be there.

I'm not sorry for expecting better service when we buy things that cost this much, regardless of who the brand is. I could buy a fully loaded Volvo for less (not saying the car itself is any better, and it definitely isn't as utilitarian) and get better service. Never mind, beating a dead horse, my point is so far I'm a bit disappointed.

Hello, did you have your fog lights done already? I mean, the edging looks black already.. :) Did a body shop do your wraps or you?

Thanks.

Hey there. The truck itself has an option package they call "Stealth" that blacks out the grille, fog housings, some interior light pieces, the black horizontal bar on the rear hatch, and the wheels. The only vinyl work done on the truck is the vertical pieces between the back doors and the rear side windows, plus the emblems. Everything else is factory.

That is a really good looking ride. I though white with the black rims was my favorite combo (what I bought) but I’m liking this more I think (damn)!
Thanks, I appreciate the feedback. Honestly, I was looking for white with stealth and thought I was going to end up settling for this color, but the more I thought about it, the more this color appealed to me. Under cooler lights is is much more gunmetal grey. Under warmer lights the green comes through a lot more. I've done quite a few double-takes since I picked it up!

I was also thinking about Silver Spruce; but I ordered as soon as the 2019 order banks opened, it was a new color and I could not find any other vehicles in that color on the lots. I did not want to have buyers remorse on a $70K vehicle so I ordered tricoat White Platinum. Eventually I saw a Silver Spruce Expedition in person and it turned out to be what I guessed it would be: something between Silver and Magnetic. I would have been happy with it too.

FYI - The TSB work begins tomorrow morning. I believe they said something like 11 hours of labor and I should be able to pick it up Thursday afternoon. They know I'm hearing the wastegate rattle as well and said they'll look to begin that work after they finish the TSB work. Essentially, they're telling me they can work one issue at a time otherwise they risk restocking fees from Ford if it turns out they didn't need a turbo (or two). I'm fine with that (not that I have a choice), as long as the issues get resolved. So far service has been great.

I haven't looked up the TSB number yet, but if this is the full phaser job, then 11hrs doesn't seem right. Took my dealer about four days, and the estimate was 3-4. But hope it helps. Let us know how it goes.
