And don't get me wrong--at $60K MSRP I want everything to work. The only advantage I have on my Ex is just two options boxes checked--but here is the list for Ford to warranty, most since new and tolerated but now at 12K I want 'em fixed (and I bet I get a "duh... dunno" on 1/2 the below):

1. Rear Camera intermittent (since new)
2. Driver Window makes noise, full up as if over-travelling (since new)
3. Cold startup rattle/noise (since new)
4. Transmission Recalibration? A. Cold start RPMs hang high, causing a slight jump when placed in DRIVE B. Slow (nearly 2 seconds) when shifting between PARK into DRIVE, slow to shift between DRIVE to REVERSE, slow when REVERSE to DRIVE. C. Not smooth at light throttle--feels like hesitation at less than 1500 rpms and ECO mode upshifts.
5. Center console silver paint chipping
6. Buzzing from- Phone/speakers when connected to Blu Tooth.

Keep it the F@(k up Ford... you are practically driving me to another brand's dealership...

Motor Biscuit is selective with their quotes. I just looked at Consumer Reports. Yes the 2018 had some problems- the first year of the redesign. But the Expy is one their recommended large SUVs. And cost of ownership included a lot more than repairs.

When I first bought mine I watched several raving reviews about the Expy on YouTube. Decided to try it just for its higher towing ability, Ecoboost and 4 low. I fallow all kinds of forums and try to be active on the forums I actually own the product. Cam phasers, turbo rattle and anything Ecoboost related are not new problems. On this forum I see blown shocks on the non CCD vehicles, the mirror popping, intelligent access not working, transmission shifts funny, the lift gate won’t open or opens on its own, I hear a clicking from the front end. My sun roof is messed up, leaks or makes noise. I can’t see my gear numbers any more. And the most popular, what size tire can I fit. All minor problems with a few exceptions. But they will add up for the average buyer. Non of it scares me off. Could the Expy be better for the price we pay, absolutely. But that could be said about almost anything. Love my Expy even with its problems.

I'll be honest. This is my first new car ownership experience with a domestic of any kind and I've been less then impressed (18 302a Max).

The little stuff adds up. 3 mentions to the dealer about popping mirrors with no resolution until I gave them the actual TSB number then all the sudden it's "yes we're very familiar with that". Having to disable what was billed as a standout feature (handsfree liftgate) because it opens randomly and lets dogs escape. Rear hatch button getting stuck. Lackluster to abysmal material quality for an $80k car. Frustrating infotainment navigation (why is the home button only present on certain screens, including NOT available when you need it most 3 menus deep into sound settings etc) and presentation. "normal" whirring/grinding noises from the front end when 4wd is engaged. Sloppy body control in normal drive mode. Hell the simple fact that you need to remember to put it in the proper drive mode EVERY time you start the car when you need it most (during big snow storms) (4w auto doesn't cut it here as the car is too slow to react to engaging the front axle and the throttle lag while it's doing it can quickly get you into bad situations on it's own).

I know most of these are nitpicky, part of owning this type or vehicle, or even a case of unrealistic expectations, but taken together, they make me kind of blah on the whole thing. That all being said, when my lease is up in 9 months there is a pretty good chance I'll end up with another one simply because of the space. Other then a suburban, which isn't going to address all the issues I have above, there isn't a better alternative that doesn't make some kind of sacrifice on space.

The biggest issue with the expedition is Ford is charging WAY to much. 55k base price is stupid high for cloths seats and 1 power seat. The xlt should start around 45k.

Value is a funny thing. Anything you buy (speaking retail primarily) is priced at what the seller believes the market will bear. And sticker is nowhere near that mark. I paid 54k for a new XLT Max 4WD with 202a and every option except tow pkg and see through roof just about a year and a half ago. The sticker was crazy high, like 67k, but I only paid 54k ...

Jeez- had a 2013 Yukon SLT that was like a Denali sans 6.2 motor. Pulled our TT good, and was very reliable over 107K when I traded for the 2019 Expy. Had some definite warts though: poor passenger foot room; harsh ride with live axle; crapo 3rd row(yanked 'em).

So hopefully the smooth sailing so far(21K in 16 months) will continue. Still debating an extended warranty, yet so far not inclined. Am changing oil 4-5K as we tow 75% of the time. Love this rig so far.

BTW there is a TSB for the lift gate issue...

If you look through the forums, there is a clear correlation between trim and amount of possible issues with the vehicle. Many of the problem trucks happen to be limited trim 302 and up and platinums. Though you see some, most ppl with xlts seem to be much more reliable, esp the ones that aren't 202. The universal issues seem to be the popping mirrors, and cam phasers, but from what I've read, ford rele doesn't see the noise as an issue as the engine works fine with the rattle and likely a by product of the diesel like design. Ill admit, the issues mine had dimmed the greatness of the truck, but mines had nowhere near the issues that some had, none of the issues affected its driving and driving other vehicles is what sparked my longing for it again. I also noticed, some ppl include negatives of the truck as a reliability issue with the truck. but when your dropping 60k+ on a mainstream truck and you get more issues on it than 23k sedan or suv it is disappointing, but theres not many suvs if at all id buy if I had a chance to get another expy. Nav is a different story though.

Haven’t read through all the comments but this just somewhat reiterates spending a few grand for a long term extended warranty.

Yes, you still have to deal with bringing the car in a little too often perhaps if you have a car that is suffering from poor reliability but for me personally I’ll survive. Would rather have my 1 year old expy than a 1 year old Tahoe (old body style now). Pretty sure these reliability scores arent hurting resale values too much. They’re pretty pricey still for fully loaded models!

I test drove a new Mercedes GLS and the interior rattled like crazy on dirt roads. BMWs are also plagued with turbo rattles. Toyota’s panoramic roofs break and cost $12k out of pocket (they blame it on user’s error). I guess these reliability issues are across the board, which is crazy given the prices of new cars!

I decided to ignore the turbo rattles, whining rear end, strange transmission behavior, etc. to enjoy the new car experience. Will think what to do when I approach the end of the 36k warranty. But for now I am enjoying the boost :)

Any proof of the 12-thousand dollar out-of-pocket cost for a Toyota panoramic roof replacement?

Yup, happened to a friend of mine but Toyota finally replaced his after many complains. It is also covered in this video (watch minutes 12-17):
I was in the market for one and decided to wait until they get the transmission and sunroof problems sorted out.

Vehicle reliability (as well as functionality) has increased magnitudes. So, a new vehicle today can be twice as unreliable as the competition, and still be magnitudes better than a few years ago.

the article doesn’t put any numbers or anything on ‘reliability’. Does consumer reports? I don’t know, but I do not trust them, for a multitude of reasons ( you can get a basic idea, but not enough to choose one product over another ).

Have you guys looked through Moto dog bisect? Pretty dumb articles and a lot of pigging backing of other peoples work. They had an article “why would anybody buy a Lincoln black label when they could have a G-Wagon”? Yes it’s $30K more for the G Wagon, but if you’re already spending a $100K why not?
