Is there a performance chip for our 4th gens? I prefer a chip over a programmer so there will be no trace of it once I unplug it?

I prefer just a plug and play with a decent 87 octane tune. I am also looking for a chip that might possibly make this trans shift better as well.

Not exactly answering your question but I just talked with the guys at 5star tuning and they say it leaves no trace. Just switch it back to stock tune before you take it in to dealer. They say the 87 octane tune adds 30-40 hp and changes a bit of the shift points.

But yeah, a chip would be simpler…

There is no "chip" that can be replaced on any modern car. Any modifications to the engine calibration would be through flash programming. As mentioned above, 5star is excellent and had a very good reputation. Whatever you do don't fall for any snake oil plug in device sold on eBay.

My Duramax has a plug and play chip. It connects into my wire harness in my engine bay. It is controlled by my gear selector and gas pedal. When intake it to the dealer I just pull out the chip and there is no trace of it.

I think the dealer can see that the ecm was accessed if they really dug into it.

Dear lord... Not this discussion again. Do some searching, you will find some good reading.

Comparing tuning on a GM diesel and Ford Gas motor, is literally comparing apples and oranges. They are not the same.

There are plug in modules that work on this platform, the only one I would consider using is this one:

To be clear, even a plug in module can be traced if the dealer/ford REALLY wants to make an issue with it, based on sensor discrepancies. Even at less power levels, these modules can be less safe than a good program from a respectable tuner. Because they demand more boost/fuel than is sometimes warranted and push the threshold a bit and bypass some of the ECM's built in safety checks.

And this is why you should NEVER do business with 5-Star, because this is all out blatant LIE. Let's not even delve in to the modules that will have jacked up data, let's go the the most basic data point....Start Cycles. Everytime the ECU in the Expedition is flashed(EVERYTIME) the "Start/Key Cycles" are set to ZERO. So you vehicle that has say 5000 miles has only been started say 3 times when you take it to the dealer. If they want to blame your Trans/Engine issue on tuning, it is the FIRST place they look, and then start digging deeper.

Either you are up front with your service rep and have a conversation with them, or PAY TO PLAY.

That being said, EVERY vehicle in my Signature except the 2021 150 have been tuned. Heck the 2020 Expedition runs on E85 for most of the Summer. I have never had an issue with warranty work, but my dealer knows I tune my vehicles. I take care of them though and don't abuse them. I do return to Stock before service, so they can flash modules if there is a TSB or something. IF something ever broke that was due to my tuning, I would pony up...that is how this works.

I was once heavy into the mod and tuning world having a 2001 SVT Lightning in which I built a 5.4 (bored to a 5.6), heads, cam, big race turbo etc. Let's say I now appreciate a turn key, factory warranty vehicle.

With that said, I believe the days of plug in tune chips are far gone for the gas Fords. To go with a reputable tuner is your best option, but as stated above, there are risks involved with that.

If I were to ever consider tuning my '20 Expy or my '20 F150 EB, I would wait until I surpassed the warranty period.

Funny thing too, as to @LokiWolf post, I recently took mine in for the 21B10 update. about a week prior to taking it in, I removed the tunes so the vehicle has time to "cycle" many times so the ECU looks clean. Funny enough, they called me right before they did the update to ask if I "had a tune" as the update would wipe it out. I found that funny for two reasons, first off, you would think their PCM flash tools would tell them immediately if the PCM was tuned. Second, I thought it was nice they actually thought of it before they flashed the PCM.

Please correct me if I am wrong, my recollection seems to favor more positive results as I age.

The Service system will flag if the key cycles is less than when it was recorded last(Last time you had in for Service), but some Tech's will ignore it. With the physical mods you have it would also be an immediate flag, and a good Tech will ask. Some tuning devices won't let you retune, if they overwrote your tune, because it thinks it already did it. Sounds like you have a good one! Keep them!

Thanks for the advice. Looks like my expy will stay stock. I was just messing with my Duramax and saw my chip and wondered if there was a chip for the expedition instead of a programmer.

Iv had a 5 star tuner in my 2018 expedition for 40 k miles with no issues. Thier customer service has been stellar. I wouldn't drive this thing without it. A chip would never do as much if they even make a chip for these. 5 star is great.

+1 for 5 Star. Been running just a 87 daily tune and it’s been great. I mostly wanted it to change how it shifted. Mission accomplished plus some extra scoot is just icing on the cake.

Again, like I said above…they do make a chip for these. The JMS boost max works on all Ecoboost Expeditions.

Any company that tells you that the dealer can’t tell it was tuned if you return to stock should not be trusted. Period. But hey, I use a tuner that doesn’t lie to me.
