Did it shut itself off or did you turn it off? Are there any codes?

It doesn't sound like a serious internal engine issue. My guess would be a bad alternator or a bearing or the power steering pump?

Another angle:

It’s not the fan shroud hitting the fan. Other opinions are a starter that’s not disengaging.

I honestly can’t tell if it’s internal or external at this point, and haven’t had the time to dive deeper.

Can you tell if it's at the front or rear of the motor ? Like a flex-plate, or torque converter issue ?

With the noise dependent on being in-gear and only reverse not having the noise I’m thinking either torque converter or the clutch pads in the transmission are shot… maybe?

Oh I didn't catch that it made the noise in Drive too. Yeah, I'd run it by a local transmission shop if you can. Get a professional diagnosis since you narrowed it down to the tranny.

Aaaaand I’m a moron.

I finally got underneath to source the noise, turns out it wasn’t the transmission.

Somehow the lower fan shroud wasn’t secured and had shifted to make contact with the fan.
