I am willing to bet it isn't a "feature" at all. I am thinking it was done out of simplicity.

Yes, for sure it was a chip shortage thing. Independent opening running boards no doubt require additional sensors/modules.
That’s not supposed to happen, I checked mine as soon as I got it because I was worried my son would climb on it when it would retract, he does, and it won’t go up. The side just stays down. I tested it with a 30 lb dumbbell first. Didn’t even try to lift it, just stayed down, other side went up like normal.
Might want to get a dealer to test it for you.
Ah. Hadn’t considered that the chip shortage could have something to do with it. Definitely a possibility. Only one final output circuit. Simpler sensing circuit.

I was talking to a tech for another tire balance issue, I asked about the running boards, he said they are likely going to come out with a sync OTA update to fix the double down and timer extension issues. he said they are mechanically the same as prior years, and the system that controls them is the same as the door ajar warnings, so they can operate independently.
Oh, that would be great if they can correct it with software. Makes sense that it uses the door switches.
I noticed something strange when getting out and rubbing my leg against the running board it seems to have a trim that pushes in. All past trucks I always thought the running board was one solid piece. Not sure if something has changed but it looks like the painted part is a separate piece and whatever adhesive is used to seal it together has failed. I suspect that left unchecked this will be a problem for water intrusion and corrossion down the road, especially in the winter. The passenger side feels pretty solid but the drivers side is separating all the way down the length of the running board. See video..

The double deploy is definitely a nuisance, but my main concern is the fact the timer option doesn’t even work. If they don’t fix this issue soon, motor burnout is going to be costly for Ford. I should be able to put my kid in his car seat on one side, and then get to the drivers side without them closing up so quickly. It’s not only annoying, but a safety issue.
Well that's just dumb. RAM pickup's running boards operate independent.

Wish they would fold under after vehicle has started moving, like the door locks that lock automatically. That would leave them extended in parking lots and eliminate need to hurry in the loading process.
Sharing current running board performance on my 22 Limited 304A SPP that was built end of August 22 as it's possible some things may have updated. When I unlock the doors, both running boards extend. If I don't touch a door, I timed 22-23 seconds and then they will close themselves. If I open a door, they will remain open for as long as any door is open. Once all doors are closed, they remain down for just over 2 seconds, then both close.
Personal commentary: FWIW, my general practice is to unlock and crack driver's door open - keeping boards deployed. Load/ unload anything and everything that is transferring, and then close drivers door when I know I'm done. In my mind, that both minimizes the number of times the boards bounce up and down, and keeps everyone safe from an accidental pinch.

Anyone heard of any plans for Ford to issue an update to fix the running board issues? Saw someone alluding to this but haven’t seen any updates come through and my dealer is zero help. Don’t want to leave it there for a week for them to tell me that’s how it’s supposed to operate.
My '17 F150's factory running boards work independently on each side, so must be a more recent change.
Keep a door open.
The setting does not work yet.
Thankfully, there’s a setting for that. Unfortunately, it does not work…at all.
