Recently purchased a 2020 Expy MAX that came with only one fob. We had the selling dealer promise a second fob (in writing), but they're dragging their feet, it seems. Maybe it's a supply chain issue (availability of the part?) or it's just not a priority for them, but they're not returning my texts asking for updates. I realize they will pay less than retail for the part and nothing for the labor, but still wondering what's the retail cost of the part and programming for the Gen 4 smart key? Anyone have to replace one at their expense?

I actually had a new key made today at the dealership. While I did not pay for it (key coverage), the tech verbally mentioned that I got a $400 key today (inclusive of the key and all programming).

I have no way of verifying this, but that's what I was told.

It's simple to program additional Ford key Fobs. OEM units are available on Ebay for around $80 bucks and there are YouTube videos explaining the procedure by placing the keys in one of the cup holders and going through he push button start and brake pedal procedure to program. The key can by cut by most local key shops. I did this for both my Raptor and Expedition. Very simple and nearly the quarter the cost of going to the dealership.

Side note: where are all these second keys going?!
Yea, really. What do people do with them? I would never accept delivery of a newer vehicle that only had one key. Make the dealer get a new one. And I do believe that you need TWO keys in order to program an additional one yourself. If you only have one then the dealer (or a good locksmith) needs to hook up the proper scan tool to erase all keys and reprogram the existing one and the new one.

Did you only have one original key? Or did you have both keys and you programed a third?

Most insurance policies have a key policy by the way. Just saying if you lose the one you have you might have coverage to replace and reprogram a new one.

I am in the same boat. I purchased a 2020 Max Limited. The dealer took 350 off the price because I purchased it from a Chevrolet dealer. The truck was a rental which is more than likely why they only have one key. I did see that my extended warranty does come with a key replacement benefit.

Yea, my car was a lease/rental also. The other thing I noticed is the Auto Start/Stop has been disabled. Is always grayed out on the display. Maybe that's a good thing, though.

Also bought my 2020 max used; also had only one fob (but it did have the second physical key, which is weird). The dealer had me come back when his "key guy" visited, and it took him about 15 minutes to get me a second fob paired to the car. Fob is branded Ford, but I don't know if it's genuine. I did text a pic of my existing fob to the dealer ahead of time per their request.

No idea what the retail cost would be, but it should be easy to find a mobile car key service to get you a second fob.

My 18 max came the same way except the dealer never followed through on the new fob and I gave up hounding them down, lol.

If the Auto Start/Stop is grayed out, it probably is due to an old battery, unless the former owner added one type of Auto Start/Stop Eliminator, in which case try pushing the button on the dash to see if it might cause it to work again. However in my estimation, you are not missing out on much without it.

Last week I finally went to the dealership to get a second key fob since I took delivery with just one key since it was a rental. The dealer did give me $350 off the sticker and I had a key replacement warranty. With my key replacement warranty, I had a $250 deductible since I used it within the first 120 days. The total cost of the key being cut and new fob was $505. Once I got my second fob I was finally able to get my door code.
