Odd Startup Behaviour - Cold Start Pull Away, Uphill

For the last year or so I've noticed the occasional odd behaviour and noise from my 2020 Expedition.

Our street is on a slight hill, and the Expedition is parked facing uphill. When I start it cold, and then pull away without waiting, when the engine gets to about 2000 rpm it feels like it's holding back, and there's a faint "pew pew pew" noise from the engine.

If instead I wait for the engine to warm a bit, or if I gently rev the engine a little first, then pull away, it doesn't exhibit this behaviour.

I don't have the cam phaser rattle noise so I don't think it's that. Just wondering if anyone has any ideas. It's due in for a service in a couple of weeks so I might bring it up then, plus it's under the extended warranty still.

If you have the parking brake set, it will hold the car back a little getting going. Also, in the uphill configuration, there is a hill hold assist that will do the same thing. It's possible that either of these two "braking" features will develop an odd noise over time.

It's not the parking brake. I manually release it before I pull away. The "pew pew pew" noise is definitely engine.

That could possibly be your issue. My 2019 does the same thing. If I start it and drive off, it's a little sluggish until it warms. My dealer told me to start it and let it idle for a minute. It's not sluggish when I do that.

Ok - that's a weight off my mind, especially knowing others experience the same thing. I thought there was something catastrophic going on.

And "they" say you dont have to wait at all when starting your vehicle and going. haha bs.

Its good to let your vehicle warm up for atleast 30 seconds before moving. Get the oil flowing especially in turbo vehicles.

I know if I cold start my expy and go the tranny will act weird on the first accel. Super wonky shifts

This. We remote start even if for 90 seconds before we head out to the vehicles. Part of that is interior comfort, but also to get a little heat and oil moving through the engine.
