My 2017 Limited has started to emit a metallic "clunk" from the steering column as it telescopes into position on startup. It sounds like a piece of metal binding then sort of springing free as the column slides out to full extension. It only makes this noise when telescoping out, not retracting. I tried moving it in and out (I know this is getting kind of graphic) using the adjustment switch on the side of the column but can't reproduce unless I turn off the ignition and restart the truck.

I'm taking it to the dealer this week but am hoping someone can give me an advance on what to expect. Many thanks!

I bought a new 2015 Expedition Limited 4x4 with the power telescoping and tilting steering column.

When new, intermittently the column would not move when I tried to move it using the switch on the column. Instead of moving, it would simply “clunk”. The vehicle had never been damaged or wrecked. I never used the programmed settings for it.

I left it with the dealer and they called - it began working and nothing to repair. The service advisor said to return it if it quit working again.

While driving one day, the problem returned. I drove to the dealer and showed the same service advisor. He checked it and said it needed repair - and made an appointment for drop-off later.

Same story - the column began working while the dealer had it and they would not repair or replace it (still under new-car warranty) - even though the service advisor had verified the defect in person.

To this day - the column occasionally will stop working and makes a loud “clunk” noise instead of moving. Mysteriously, it begin working again. Perhaps a loose connection that reconnects when a bump in the road is hit?

I don’t have an answer for you but it must be a defect involving the power columns in the 2015 - 2017 models.

Good luck.

Thanks, 99WhiteC5Coupe. That sounds annoying as hell and hopefully not a preview of what will happen to mine. Luckily, this problem presents 10/10 when the vehicle starts up. So I'm counting on it happening at the dealership in front of the service advisor, service tech, God and everybody else. If they can diagnose and fix, I'll post the results here. Cheers!

I’ve also had the same recurring issue since new with “no key detected” and “trailer wiring fault” messages. The Ford dealer could not find a trouble code and could not fix the issue.

To this day - the messages randomly and intermittently occur, sometimes together - sometimes just one. I have never towed or connected a wiring harness to the four or seven pin receptacles.

That sounds like fluctuating voltage. Could be torn or unravelling insulation in a dashboard wiring harness. Do I gather you're not tripping over yourself to trace electrical quirks?

Well, I did get mine checked out today. Ford diagnosis is that the steering column has "failed internally". I asked the SM if it's bent, cracked, maybe a broken linkage, just trying to get a handle on why/how. I could not get a more comprehensive answer though. Apparently, the solution is to just replace the steering column - at a cost of about $1700. There's no factory recall on the issue...so Merry Christmas!

The upside is since there isn't a risk of loss of control, I have time to decide what to do about it if anything. The problem will eventually cause the steering wheel telescoping to give out which is not the worst outcome. Christmas is saved for now as I plan to take a day or seven and think things over.

BTW, when I started the truck to drive out of the dealer shop - no clunk! Somebody diddled something during the diagnostic. I suspect like you 99WhiteC5Coupe, if the clunk comes back I could maybe learn to live with this "unique feature".
