Intermitent trouble starting

Hello all, I have a 2001 XLT and every once in a while I have a problem starting the truck. When the ignition is turn there comes a sound that sounds almost like the starter is bad.... but.... if I hold the shifter all the way up into park, and try again, she fires right up. any ideas? Thanks

is it grinding noise? if so mine has the same problem, i've done some looking around and found 5 other poeple with expeditions with the sam problem, they say there is like 8 teeth wore on the flywheel.hope this helps
