I would check the Neutral Safety Switch, or it could be the shift linkage under the dash triggering it. I have a 99 EB 5.4 and it did the same thing, no crank, no start unless in neutral. My friend also has a 00 XLT 5.4 with a similar issue. There are two little bolts under the dash that I tightened and put blue loctite on. My car didn't even go into park and actually rolled a couple times. After I tightened that up, I haven't had a single issue since. Those two little bolts come loose really easily.
