High RPM at startup

I have a 03 5.4L, and when I start it, it idles at 1100 rpm's until I put in gear, then it goes back down to normal. Seems to happen when it sits outside over night. I'm just wondering if this is something I should worry about or take it in to have it looked at?

I think I would have it looked at if under warranty. Whats going to happen is premature wear on the engine, it runs a high rpm before the oil has time to get up into the engine. IMO>

No. The Dealer won't charge you anything.

Does the idle speed ever go back down if you do not put it in gear?

No, I've waited a minute or 2 and it stays at 1100 until I put it into gear. It's only happened about 10 times after sitting for a day or two and being started in the morning. Also, if it does it, and I put it into gear, then immediately back into park, it's normal idle speed.

It's an 03. I was ASSuming that he still had the factory 3/36.

I do not have a definitive answer for you, SmoOothride. I can be a slight mechanicaly probelm which would probably require testing or a simple computer glich.

Either way, I'd make sure you can reproduce it upon demand before taking it to the stealer. Nothing more frustrating that to have the Service Dept Monkey have your 40K truck all day just to tell you they couldn't reproduce the problem.

Same Thing

I have a 99 with the 5.4 L and I noticed this morning it does the same thing. I park in the garage so it's not real cold (maybe 45-50 degrees). When I started it this morning, it idled at 1100 rpm until I put it into gear and the idle came down. I didn't wait to see how long it would idle at 1100 but it did for at least 20 seconds or so. I really think this is normal. I know these engines don't have chokes, but it's probably a solenoid or something that kicks in when the air temp outside is cold.

I parked outside last night (about 35 degrees) and this morning my truck idled at 1100 rpm for about 30 seconds and then came back down to 800 rpm. It did this without me putting it into gear.

I noticed that my truck would not start at the first attempt. I had to give a bit of gas and hold on slightly more(only slightyly) before it would start. Also noticed that the RMP would go up but come down in a few seconds. IS this normal?

I also found that the gear would only shift up at about 80 km to the highest gear and if I ease the gas the gear would shift down even above 80kms. All these started after I took it to the dealer for a service. It could be mere coincidence.

Any advice would me much appreciated. Would tuning help at all?

The normal start up is first time. Regarding the gear shifts this was the first time I noticed it down shifting at such a high speed.Normally long before it gets to about 80km I am in the highest gear and also would not downshift at around 80km and can come down in speed a lot more before it downshifts. This is the normal way it used to drive before I took it for service with the Ford dealer.

yall don't worry, this is perfectly normal. If you dont't believe me than disconnect your battery for half an hour than reconnect it, turn it on, and it'll idle just about 1K then go down. I THINK it does this so the computer "learns" the air density and properly adjusts on how much gas to dump in the cyclinders. That is your Intake Air Temperature sensor doing its job, IIRC, so yeah, its just perfectly normal.
