I've experienced the clutch delay in the Commander, but the Exp keeps the front wheels locked in with a pretty high barrier to disconnect them. Any slip and they are quickly re-engaged.
To answer you other question the Exp is outstanding in ice and snow, dependent on tires.
I've been running Yoko Geolander G015's on my Commander for almost 10 years. Great on-road behavior and I haven't been able to get stuck when I have ventured out a little. Ice/snow performance is behind dedicated winter tires, but it still does the job quite well. Also, I literally cannot make...
Depending on the mode you select, the computer will actually disconnect the front axle if it doesn't sense that you need it. Watch your Off Road Power Distribution screen when just driving around normally in 4A.
Through a series of government mishandlings (or maybe just one), I have a clean and clear title for my second vehicle that was totaled by a rear-end collision. It's actually my main commuter.
What is their reasoning the Tcase is on it's last legs? Unless 4A was used for thousands of miles with tires in that condition I doubt that's the case. Also, depending where the tire is the open diff will likely make up a lot of the slack anyway.
Otherwise, it is generally not recommended to...
Just to give anyone a quick comparison - With the stock tires on the Expy our Commander runs circles around the Expy in the snow.
The Commander has worn-out (down to the wear bars) Yokohama Geolanders on it.
The Expy has 5k on brand new Hankooks.
4wd helps, but tires make all the difference.
I've done almost all of my own service and repair up until this Expy, so I'm familiar with what the oil looks like going in. I definitely should have left with that sample, though.
It's warranteed until 100k Bumper-bumper, so if I loose a diff between now and then even without a fluid change...
That's a great idea about taking a pic. I'll have to remember that. I assumed it would make sense for the computer to log it.
I was able to find the album setting to make it visible. Can you see it now?
Quick update for anybody still interested.
Red had a service appointment yesterday. I have noticed that this burning smell happens only when the rear diff locks - I've spun the rear tires on ice in 2WD and smelled it right after. I also drove to the dealership in 4A and got a rear diff overheat...
Absolutely. Lets see if this works. I didn't feel like driving up on blocks so here's the best I could do with a cell phone and utility light. Keep in mind - 4 months old, 2200 miles.
Editing so I'm not doxxing myself.
