I have been in the diesel world for many years. I have not owned a gasoline engine truck for almost 14 years. I have become very accustom to the torque of a diesel. I decided to get me a weekend toy and winter vehicle since moving to Colorado. I have an 01 Expedition with the 5.4 4R100 4x4 and 3.55 gears all stock. This thing sucks! It won't get out of its own way and still gets much worse mileage than my 7.3 does with a few goodies and a lead foot. Am I asking too much of it? I am scared to try to pass anyone without having a running start at it. Climbing over some of the passes is difficult. It will not maintain in drive and will speed up a bit if it drops a gear and revs extremely high. It wont even spin the tires on a dirt road! I have checked all sensors and the only thing I can tell on my scanner is that it runs just slightly lean. Not anywhere near enough to set a code though. Is there an easy way to test the cats? That is the last thing I can think of. This thing purrs like a kitten and idles smooth as can be otherwise. Let me know what you guys think.

The post is not poking fun at gassers. I think my Expedition has power issues. The Expy rides great and is so easy to drive and is much more nimble on the trails than any fullsize diesel truck. I have driven 5.4 trucks that run just fine. I can't imagine this Expy being that much heavier than a half ton truck. Maybe it is normal and I should just keep my mouth shut...

Maybe its the altitude where you live? Mine before any mods was pretty peppy.

I'm sure altitude has some effect on it but other trucks I have driven don't seem so sluggish. I don't want to throw parts at it. I will put gears in it if the power is what I should expect. Maybe I should just do some exhaust work first since I want to do it anyway. Would the cats being clogged cause a lean condition?

Of course any thing that affects exhaust flow will affect power. I think you should try to find a similar model expedition and year and drive it to compare. There may not be anything wrong with yours.

Is the Expy a "colorado native." Gas engines need tuning to run at this altitude. They do it at the factory for cars that ship to anywhere over 5000'. If your car was originally from CO, its not the problem, but if you just brought it here, it could be.

Yes, CatBack issues immediately turn into power loss. Intake issues too.

But hey, you can get in and turn it on and there are more gas pumps.

Your Expedition Is just probably giving you what it has. The 5.4 motor is not comparable to your other 7.3.
