Paint Bubbling, We need EVERYONE to register a complaint! READ FORDS RESPONSE!!!

They only offer a temporary solution to a permanent problem.

Mine was bubbling at 14 months from manufacture. MY2016

It took fighting tooth and nail to get it fixed. Since I had only owned it a month as a CPO, I even tried suggesting lemon. That led to a Ford Person calling back and saying they clause only applied to when it went through a panel. Said it must be salt on roads. I am in California and not in the mountains, her response was must be salt air. I pointed out I am in the Sacramento and a drive away from either snow or ocean. That is when finally they agreed to have it looked at and that led to the double sided tape test at the dealer.

I own a 2012 and the paint bubble after about 3 years.

The all aluminum F-series came out in 2015 and I have not heard of any problems. They use a different alloy of aluminum, with a different coating applied at the aluminum factory and different primer after the body part is stamped and assembled. The 2018 Expedition uses the same process.

So I have a different question, are there certain expeditions that DIDN’T have the paint bubbling issue? Because my 2015 has not exhibited a single bubble or issue. I inspect for it like a hawk every time I wash the truck. Not a single anything...under the liftgate lip, hood, rear surface of liftgate...nothing. Is it just a matter of time or are there some trucks that were fine. Mine was built in Kentucky.

I have a 2014 Expedition that we purchased new almost 5 years ago. At 22,000 miles and about 2 years in we noticed the paint bubbling issue on our liftgate. I took it back to the dealership and Ford covered the repaint fix. Here we are 3 years later and 49,790 miles and it's really bad again going the entire length of the liftgate. Ford won't pay to fix it this time as they say their fix was warranteed for 12 months only. The bodyshop that did the fix say they usually have a 3 year warranty on paint (we're just under that three years by a month so we're in that window) but won't cover it because Ford paid for it so they'll honor the 12 month warranty that Ford offered. This is absolutely ridiculous. We paid $60,000 for a truck that looks like crap because of a known problem with paint that Ford can't seem to fix. Will not ever buy another one.

Sun is bright this morning. The paint area is specular reflection (mirror) and the 60 grit aluminum is very diffuse reflection so it might actually be easier on the eyes while driving into sun. I might go over one side with finer grit and polish just to extend the test case. A careful job of sanding (or blasting) specific areas might look a lot better than that paint bubbling nonsense.

BTW ... in the bright sun it has a metalflake appearance with all the component colors reflecting at the grain level. Kind of cool.

OK … the one year follow-up report. This is the picture from this morning. I never even washed this BEATER over the past year, sat outside the whole time, drove all winter etc. Plenty of salt here in WNY. There is absolutely ZERO difference from last year, no corrosion. This is because the raw aluminum instantly forms a protective layer of aluminum oxide (read that in a book). The only corrosion is an artifact of from when it was coated with paint and it corroded UNDER the OEM paint. Its looks so good I plan to expand the area of raw aluminum, may even have to zap the sticker. TFF

In my experience, the problem usually starts by the third year. My Expedition started bubbling in 2012 (it's on the Carfax). My mom's 2015 Explorer started bubbling in 2016. I've even seen quite a few bubbling before they even leave the new car lot. There's a Facebook group dedicated to the problem and the other day someone posted a 2019 Explorer with the hood bubbling. :/

Some in the thread say F-150’s are not affected. There are pages and pages of similar posts on the F-150 forums.

Is there anyone with a turd generation expedition that doesn’t have any sign of corrosion yet on aluminum hood or liftgate? Mine doesn’t yet. Not a single sign of it. But I want to know if this is just a matter of time or if some escaped this fate. 2015 EL Limited.

I thought mine was clear at first, then noticed it on the tail gate edge and inside under the tailgate window.
